Where oh where do the leaves all go when winter comes and the cold winds blow?

What happens to fish, flowers, field mice, and other living things when ponds freeze and the air turns blustery? Walk with a curious child and his parents as winter’s first snow falls and find out!

This December, we’ll read When Winter Comes by Nancy Van Laan. As the season begins to change, plants and animals begin to make plans for the cold weather! This book guides young learners to explore how the world changes during the coldest time of year.

After the story, participants will make their own winter landscape to take home and join a special scavenger hunt. Using paper plates as the base, children can bring their imagined landscapes to life with craft paper and populate their scenes with animal cut-outs. But this wouldn’t be a winter landscape without snow! Cotton balls and foam sheets will be provided to add some winter magic to the scenes. The final work can also be fashioned into an ornament.
