With a long history of shipbuilding and maritime trade to build on, when war broke out patriots in Essex and the estuary were eager to take on the British navy—at great risk and in pursuit of great reward. Based in part on her new book Awakenings and Revolutions: The Harts, Saybrook, and the New Nation, historian Elizabeth Normen will talk about the Connecticut River’s maritime contributions to the Revolutionary War. She’ll discuss the Connecticut State Navy, privateering, the local loyalist-on-patriot action known as the whaleboat wars, and more.
