Ben James started an ambitious journey just before Memorial Day in 2024 with little more than a camera and a microphone. His plan: to bike from the source of the Connecticut River to its mouth, taking photos and interviewing people he met along the way. At a moment when he felt so much seemed to be unraveling, he wanted to give his full attention to people whose stories are not often told. Join Ben at the Connecticut River Museum to hear the story of his journey and the colorful, emotional and often surprising picture it paints of life along the River.

Ben James is an award-winning audio and print journalist based in western Massachusetts. His stories have aired on NPR’s Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and on numerous podcasts and radio stations. His essays and articles have been published in The Atlantic, Kenyon Review, and other magazines and journals. He won a 2023 national Edward R. Murrow Award for his radio work. In the summer of 2024, he rode his bicycle the length of the Connecticut River, conducting extensive interviews along the way on politics, jobs, and environmental issues. The project resulted in a multi-part series broadcast on public radio stations across New England. He teaches journalism at Northfield Mount Hermon High School.
