A. Rives Potts Speaker for Curatorial Fund Dinner

Legendary yachtsman and long-time CRM member, A. Rives Potts, shares stories of his experiences as a transatlantic yachtsman and a competitive racer with Dennis Conner’s crew during America’s Cup.

Potts completed several Trans-Atlantic races in his storied career. In 1979, Potts joined sailing-legend Dennis Conner’s crew and trained relentlessly for the America’s Cup. They won 49 out of 51 trial races and went on the win the world’s most coveted yachting trophy in 1980. This former Commodore of the New York Yacht Club sailed in four other America’s Cup campaigns and more than twenty Bermuda Races. He was sailing with Ted Turner when they won the harrowing Fastnet Race in 1979; fifteen sailors died and seventy-five yachts capsized.

Today A. Rives Potts is the President of Safe Harbor Marinas and former president and operations chief for Brewer’s Yacht Yards, Westbrook, CT

The selection of this year’s speaker was inspired by the recent purchase of a spirited painting by Antonio Jacobson of a Trans-Atlantic Race between Caldwell Colt’s schooner yacht, Dauntless and Coronet in 1878.

Organized in 2009 to recognize the work of our Founding Director, The Brenda Milkofsky Curatorial Fund is a restricted fund of the Connecticut River Museum designated for the acquisition and conservation of the historical artifacts and records of the Connecticut River.
