SUMMARY:Live from the Boathouse! Steve Gephard presents Sea Lamprey: Misunderstood River Engineers
DESCRIPTION:Live from the Boathouse!\nSteve Gephard presents Sea Lamprey: Misunderstood River Engineers\nTuesday\, September 09\, 2025\n6 – 7 pm \nIn-person and Virtual Pricing:\nMembers: FREE (please use the ticket reservation link to reserve your spot)\nNon-Members: $5.00 \nThis lecture will be available in person and over Zoom. To access the live stream\, please purchase a Virtual Ticket using the link below! \nRESERVE YOUR SPOT \n  \n \nSea Lamprey have a bad reputation: they invaded the Great Lakes in the mid-1800s\, they suck the blood of other fish\, and many consider their appearance to be off-putting. But these parasitic creatures are not all that they seem. Sea Lamprey play an important and under-recognized role in the Connecticut River ecosystem\, providing food for other river species and bringing in vital nutrients from the ocean. Join Steve Gephard for a talk that dissects these misunderstood fish and challenges our ideas of which species are “good” and worthy of our appreciation. \nAs a Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection fisheries biologist\, Steve Gephard worked tirelessly for 42years to restore a viable population of Atlantic salmon and other migratory fishes in the Connecticut River. Now\, he educates the public about the role fish play in the ecosystem and works with governments in North America and Europe to conserve salmon populations in the North Atlantic.

SUMMARY:Thursdays on the Dock: Local Honey
DESCRIPTION:Thursdays on the Dock: Local Honey \nThursday\, August 21\, 2025 \n5:30-7:15 \nThursdays on the Dock has been a shoreline staple for 16 years and remains the premier destination for waterfront music. Swing by each Thursday evening in July and August\, bring a chair or blanket\, listen to a free concert\, and watch the sun go down over the river. \nBorn out of a mutual respect for all things auditory and a humble appreciation for an organic evolution\, lifelong friends Frank Natter\, Erin Smith\, and Abraham Wilson have embarked on an unforgettable musical journey: the band Local Honey. Steely and deliberate songwriting that casually staggers down the line between rhythm and melody\, laced with loose yet conscious jams\, and extraordinary vocals will transport any listener to another realm. Experiencing an amazing live show is one of life’s sweetest pleasures and for the person who is treated to Local Honey\, they will be given music performed with pure emotion\, raw talent\, and endless gratitude. \nThis music series is generously supported by Privé Swiss Wellness. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please check our site. Youth ages 12-15 are welcome to participate with a registered participating adult\, or as pre-approved by the race committee based on proven paddling/ water safety prowess.   \nDepending on local/ governmental restrictions\, the race may be followed by an awards ceremony; otherwise\, awards will be given to paddlers upon finishing.   \nWhile we have safety vessels\, this race is strictly for paddlers of an intermediate to advanced level that are comfortable to safely paddle potentially against wind and potentially intense boat/wind chop for 9 miles.  All paddlers must be wearing a USCG approved personal flotation device.  All standup paddleboarders must have a PFD and leash\, no exceptions.   \nParticipants must plan to arrange for transportation back to their cars. The race committee/ Connecticut River Museum is not able to provide transportation! \nPlease bring your own hydration and nutrition\, as unfortunately\, we will not be able to assist with this critical part of the race (+pre/post) for you!   \nRefunds/ Rain Date- This race is a fundraising charitable event run by volunteers with assistance from the Connecticut River Museum.  The race will go on with light/moderate rain and will be canceled in the event of any dangerous conditions\, including lightning\, heavy winds\, poor visibility\, etc.  Unfortunately\, with the tremendous amount of effort needed to set this race up\, we would not be able to reschedule within the same year\, and we most graciously view registrations as a donation to the museum’s educational fund.  Please inquire with any questions.    \n  \nSponsored by: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nIn-Kind Sponsors: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Watermark: Capturing the Connecticut
DESCRIPTION:Special Exhibit \nWatermark: Capturing the Connecticut \nOn view: August 15 through October 19\, 2025 \n\nThe exhibit and related programs will engage visitors through the work of the artists\, allowing viewers to discover compelling stories about the River and connect with the landscape and communities around them. Selected artists for the exhibit are Evie Lovett\, Janet Pritchard\, Guy Russell\, and Nancy O. In addition to the exhibit itself\, our Education department will develop materials to engage younger audiences in close looking and observation. \nPhoto Credit: Detail from the Stream series by Guy Russell.
