The Lay Home\, located just up the street from the Museum building\, is a deeply historic property with centuries of stories to tell. In celebration of recent renovations to the Lay Home\, the Museum is hosting a full day of opportunities to enjoy and explore this cornerstone of Essex. \nAt 10:00 am\, local yoga instructor Hayley Cann will lead a guided yoga session in the Lay Home’s multipurpose room. Beginners are encouraged to attend! Please bring your own yoga mat. \nFollowing yoga\, there will be a 30-minute guided house tour at 11:00 am\, led by the Museum’s Executive Director\, Elizabeth Kaeser. This program will act as a preview for future Lay Home tours and will explore the process behind telling the story of a building with rich\, layered history. During the Open House from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm\, additional 30-minute guided house tours will take place. \nAt 5:00 pm\, the multipurpose room will host a musical performance by Ben Cosgrove\, a traveling composer-performer whose music explores themes of landscape\, place\, and environment. As the Museum’s new Artist-in-Residence supported by grants funds from the Wolf Kahn Foundation\, Ben will create music inspired by the Connecticut River over the next year. This concert provides an opportunity for Ben to share his existing music and get to know members of the community. Ben will be present in the Lay Home before his performance begins\, so make sure to stop by and chat! \n  \nHayley Cann is a 200-hour certified yoga teacher specializing in Vinyasa and Hatha flow with an emphasis on rest\, restoration\, and mindful alignment. A former athlete\, she found yoga through injury and a shift toward gentler\, more intentional movement. Her teaching invites students to slow down\, reconnect to breath\, and support the nervous system while building ease and awareness in the body. Outside of teaching\, Hayley enjoys time in nature\, especially swimming and being in the water\, where she feels deeply grounded and restored. \n  \n  \nDescribed by the Boston Globe as “a sonic plein-air painter… [using] his piano as a paintbrush\,” Ben Cosgrove has performed in every U.S. state except for Delaware\, collaborated with groups ranging from rock bands to research scientists\, contributed music to several radio and film projects (including the recent Ken Burns documentary The American Buffalo)\, and held residencies and fellowships with institutions including NASA\, Acadia National Park\, White Mountain National Forest\, Isle Royale National Park\, Harvard University\, Middlebury College\, the New England National Scenic Trail\, the Schmidt Ocean Institute\, the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife & Fish Refuge\, and the Sitka Center for Art & Ecology.

It is so different than it is any other time of the year. There are no other vessels on the water\, and with no leaves on the trees\, our wildlife viewing is easy and fun. \nAs the river\, lakes and ponds to our north freeze\, Eagles and others make their way to the lower CT River for their favorite food – FISH. Join us on this approximately 2 hour “on-the-water” cruise to search for eagles and other winter wildlife. In the past we have spotted up to a record 46 eagles\, 3 types of grebes\, fox\, 3 types of swans\, 3 types of mergansers\, many different gulls\, loons\, golden eagle\, coyote\, deer\, many hawk species\, 3 types of seals\, and even a bobcat. We will have Naturalists on board to narrate and make sure you don’t miss a thing! \nRiverQuest has a heated cabin\, but we suggest that you dress in warm layers since the best views will be from the open decks. In a series of conversations with everything from the melting brook to chirping birds\, they say goodbye to winter and welcome the lushness of spring. \nThis February\, we’ll read Goodbye Winter\, Hello Spring by Kenard Pak. This book is an excellent tool for young learners to explore this unique time of year for the natural world. \nAfter the story\, participants will make drawings of the four seasons and join a special scavenger hunt. Young learners and their caregivers will explore the season changes with four tree colorings that will then be glued together to form a standing 3D tree. Talking Rivers is an organization that uses ecocentric storytelling\, art\, and science to advocate for the Rights of the Upper St. Lawrence River and Adirondack watersheds of northern New York\, Haudenosaunee Territory\, and works with others locally and globally to promote the importance of listening to and taking into account the voice of rivers\, their watersheds and their human and other-than-human beings in their decision making and actions. Join environmental story-makers Blake Lavia & Tzintzun Aguilar-Izzo for a webinar that explores their organization’s blend of advocacy\, storytelling\, art\, and science. \n  \n \nBlake and Tzintzun (both they/them) are two environmental story-makers from the Talking Wings Collective\, who helped found Talking Rivers. In collaboration with Talking Rivers\, they are currently working to create spaces in which humans can unite to protect Land and Water. Blake and Tzintzun reside as settlers along the banks of Akwesasne/St. Regis River\, their friend and guardian. This River flows through New York’s North Country\, Haudenosaunee Territory\, to meet with Kaniatarowanénhne\, the Great or St. Lawrence River. \n  \nThis event will be hosted over Zoom. Check in at the front desk upon arrival. \n \nLittle foxling\, where will you go? \nA red fox emerges from its burrow one wintry morning\, a fiery streak against stark white surroundings\, driven by hunger and curiosity to investigate its world. Encountering a mouse\, a hare\, and a wolverine\, the little fox takes on the role of both hunter and hunted before returning to the safety of its den\, where — perhaps — it dreams of something more. \nThis January\, we’ll read Little Fox in the Snow by Jonathan London. The poetic text and Impressionistic illustrations teach young learners about the behaviors of winter wildlife. \nAfter the story\, participants will make a paper fox to bring home and enjoy a special scavenger hunt. Young learners and their caregivers will have the opportunity to bring the fox from the book to life by using a paper cup and craft paper to create a 3D fox. Check in at the front desk upon arrival. \n \nWhere oh where do the leaves all go when winter comes and the cold winds blow? \nWhat happens to fish\, flowers\, field mice\, and other living things when ponds freeze and the air turns blustery? Walk with a curious child and his parents as winter’s first snow falls and find out! \nThis December\, we’ll read When Winter Comes by Nancy Van Laan. As the season begins to change\, plants and animals begin to make plans for the cold weather! This book guides young learners to explore how the world changes during the coldest time of year. \nAfter the story\, participants will make their own winter landscape to take home and join a special scavenger hunt. Using paper plates as the base\, children can bring their imagined landscapes to life with craft paper and populate their scenes with animal cut-outs. But this wouldn’t be a winter landscape without snow! Cotton balls and foam sheets will be provided to add some winter magic to the scenes. To access the live stream\, please\npurchase a Virtual Ticket using the link below! \nRESERVE YOUR SPOT \n  \nThe issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 did not guarantee equal treatment and opportunities for those freed. In 1995\, the General Assembly established the Connecticut Freedom Trail as a way to recognize African Americans’ and other minority populations’ fight for freedom and social equality in Connecticut and to mark sites that bear witness to milestones in that quest. Join Tammy Denease\, the current outreach director of the Connecticut Freedom Trail\, to learn about her experiences bringing historical sites to the CFT and the importance of preserving accurate and complete history. \n \n  \nTammy Denease is the current Outreach Director of the Connecticut Freedom Trail. As the\nowner of Hidden Women\, LLC\, she is a diversity\, equity and belonging consultant for historical organizations. In her role as the Executive Artistic Director of Hidden Women Stage Company she is a writer\, producer and director of historical period plays. For the past twenty years she has been a museum educator and guide. Tammy is a Certified Interpretive Guide and also serves on the Board of Directors for The Connecticut League of Museums.

Connecticut did not support the Constitutional Amendment creating Prohibition\, and violations of the law were widespread. Join historian and storyteller Mike Allen to learn more about this rebellious chapter in the state’s history and the role the Connecticut River played in bootlegging. \n \nMike Allen has lived in Connecticut for more than 50 years and specializes in bringing history to life. He is the producer and host of the podcast\, Amazing Tales About History\, featuring weekly stories about interesting people\, places\, and events. Mike’s career began as a radio news director. He became the Press Secretary to the Mayor of Danbury and later spent 25 years in an international corporate position where he specialized in communications and marketing. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \nHighclere Castle Spirits\, LLC\, known for their gin which contains “a delicate balance of juniper\, lime flower\, orange peel and a tough of lavender\,” will be tabling at this event.

Starting in the rocky peaks\, it winds its way through coniferous forest\, gushes through v-shaped valleys\, and roars down magnificent waterfalls. \nThis November\, we’ll read The River That Flows Beside Me by Charlotte Guillain\, winner of the 2024 Bank Street College of Education Best Book of the Year (Ecology) and the Good Housekeeping Best Kids Book Award 2023. Throughout his life\, including the time he spent living in Hartford\, he took an interest in the spirit world through attending seances\, palm readings\, and meeting mediums. Join historian Jason Scappaticci for a lecture that explores this supernatural through the lens of one of America’s greatest literary minds. \n \nJason Scappaticci was born and raised in Manchester\, CT where he continues to live with his partner and son. After high school\, he earned his BA in History from Utica College of Syracuse University. After returning home to CT\, he enrolled in Trinity College and earned his MA in American Studies. He has a passion for history and enjoys sharing that passion with others. Some topics of particular interest for Jason are presidential history\, world fairs\, and the golden age of transatlantic passenger liners. \nJason has worked in higher education since 2003. He began his career at Manchester Community College\, working with low-income and first-generation college students. After 16 years at Manchester Community College\, Jason was named the Associate Dean of Student Affairs at Capital Community College.

During this program\, Evie Lovett will touch on the historical origins of cyanotype photography and its contemporary usages in education and fine art. \nLovett walked the watershed where she lives in Vermont\, from its headwaters in a damp spot in a forested nature preserve\, down past her home\, alongside dirt roads\, backyards\, an auto repair shop’s junked cars\, fields of corn\, beaver dams\, wetlands\, a bird “hot spot”\, the village of Putney\, Vermont\, the shuttered Putney Paper Mill (once powered by the brook)\, under I-91 and the railroad tracks\, until it reached the Connecticut River. Along the way\, she made photographs\, gathered plants\, shapes\, and patterns. Back in her studio\, she incorporated this material\, along with text\, research\, and maps\, into her art. \n  \nEvie Lovett’s work spans cyanotype\, digital and analog photography\, digital media\, storytelling\, encaustic painting\, teaching\, public art\, and social practice in art\, in multiple mediums. She is motivated to explore the spaces where people and the natural world meet and interact\, to slow down and listen to the stories that emerge when good questions are asked of people and places. Bringing a social and environmental justice and equity lens to her work is a priority. What especially fuels her is when the tools of art-making are in people’s own hands\, enabling them to explore aspects of themselves\, their families\, their communities\, and the world around them through art-making and community collaboration\, fearlessly and with joy. No experience necessary. All supplies provided. \nJoin exhibiting artist Evie Lovett for a hands-on experience making photographs using objects\, the light of the sun\, and water! With cyanotype photography\, we make photographs by placing objects you choose on specially coated non-toxic light-sensitive paper\, exposing it to the light of the sun\, and developing the image in water. The result is a captivating image in shades of dark blue to white. To access the live stream\, please purchase a Virtual Ticket using the link below! \nRESERVE YOUR SPOT \n  \n \nSea Lamprey have a bad reputation: they invaded the Great Lakes in the mid-1800s\, they suck the blood of other fish\, and many consider their appearance to be off-putting. But these parasitic creatures are not all that they seem. Sea Lamprey play an important and under-recognized role in the Connecticut River ecosystem\, providing food for other river species and bringing in vital nutrients from the ocean. Join Steve Gephard for a talk that dissects these misunderstood fish and challenges our ideas of which species are “good” and worthy of our appreciation. \nAs a Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection fisheries biologist\, Steve Gephard worked tirelessly for 42years to restore a viable population of Atlantic salmon and other migratory fishes in the Connecticut River. Now\, he educates the public about the role fish play in the ecosystem and works with governments in North America and Europe to conserve salmon populations in the North Atlantic.

Crafts will take place in the Museum’s Boathouse. A program just for kids 4+ and their caregivers\, River Tales includes a story and craft activity themed around nature. \n \nUnder the watchful eye of their mother on the shore\, two otter pups glide\, dive\, hunt and explore their underwater world. Follow their adventures to learn about otter behavior and the role they play in the river ecosystem. \nIn September we’ll read Otters Under Water by Jim Arnosky\, a bright\, cheerful adventure for young learners with beautiful watercolor illustrations. \n  \nQuestions? DESCRIPTION:Join us aboard RiverQuest & Onrust as we sail to a special spot on the Connecticut River where 100’s of thousands of Tree Swallows gather. After spending the day miles away\, the swallows return each night to sleep in the reeds. They gather at sunset and perform aerial ballets forming an amazing display of art\, coordination and cooperation! \nEnjoy the entire evening! We will spend 2+ hours on the water aboard Onrust. \nThis sail is primarily to see the Tree Swallows\, however\, it is also about the journey….there is so much to see while sailing along the river. \nThis is a small group experience that is unique each sailing. DESCRIPTION:August 16\, 2025 \n8:00am to ~12:00pm  \nRACE STARTS BY 8:30 SHARP! \n  \nJoin us for the Connecticut River Museum’s eighth annual downriver paddle regatta\, which benefits the Museum’s education programs! \nThis is a One Way 9 Mile Race\, Point A to Point B. Registrants must find their own rides to/from each location. \nThis fun race/ regatta is open to all non-motorized\, safe\, and seaworthy paddle craft\, including but not limited to: canoes\, kayaks\, stand-up/ prone paddleboards\, rowboats\, surf skis\, shells\, currachs\, OC’s…   \nOur partner\, Surfrider Foundation Connecticut\, will also have the Surfrider CT SUP Sprints once the top racers finish conquering the current! This is a five-race circuit with top prizes including top of the line one of a kind Quickblade Race Paddles. \nFood will be available from Porky Pete’s BBQ! \nMore details to follow!  \n  \nRace Information \nRace begins at CT River Eagle Landing State Park in Haddam and ends at Connecticut River Museum (not a loop race) \nStart- Eagle Landing State Park (Gazebo)\, 14 Little Meadow Rd\, Haddam\, CT 06438  \nFinish- In front of the Connecticut River Museum\, 67 Main St\, Essex\, CT 06426 \n  \nRegistration Fees: \n$60 per solo vessel\, $80 per multi-person vessel. Online registration will remain open until just before the race starts. Please help us and save time by registering before arriving at the event venue.   \nClick here to register \nOpen to men and women age 16 and over\, with classes for SUP (All)\, Kayak and Open/ Miscellaneous. Note: the classes may change based on registration numbers.   \nThe race is staffed with support and safety boats. Youth ages 12-15 are welcome to participate with a registered participating adult\, or as pre-approved by the race committee based on proven paddling/ water safety prowess.   \nDepending on local/ governmental restrictions\, the race may be followed by an awards ceremony; otherwise\, awards will be given to paddlers upon finishing.   \nWhile we have safety vessels\, this race is strictly for paddlers of an intermediate to advanced level that are comfortable to safely paddle potentially against wind and potentially intense boat/wind chop for 9 miles.  All paddlers must be wearing a USCG approved personal flotation device.  All standup paddleboarders must have a PFD and leash\, no exceptions.   \nParticipants must plan to arrange for transportation back to their cars. The race committee/ Connecticut River Museum is not able to provide transportation! \nPlease bring your own hydration and nutrition\, as unfortunately\, we will not be able to assist with this critical part of the race (+pre/post) for you!   \nRefunds/ Rain Date- This race is a fundraising charitable event run by volunteers with assistance from the Connecticut River Museum.  The race will go on with light/moderate rain and will be canceled in the event of any dangerous conditions\, including lightning\, heavy winds\, poor visibility\, etc.  Unfortunately\, with the tremendous amount of effort needed to set this race up\, we would not be able to reschedule within the same year\, and we most graciously view registrations as a donation to the museum’s educational fund.  Please inquire with any questions.    \n  \nSponsored by: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nIn-Kind Sponsors: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
