SUMMARY:RiverQuest - Selden Island Hike
DESCRIPTION:The Connecticut River Museum is excited to offer this unique experience. We will be departing on the vessel RiverQuest at 8:00am to go to Selden Neck State Park. There will be guided hikes of your choosing. Pack a lunch in your day pack to enjoy on the island. We will return to the Museum. \nSELDEN NATURE HIKE:\nSelden Neck State Park\, bordered to the east by Selden Creek and by the Connecticut River to the west\, is a 607-acre island roughly a half-mile wide and one-and-a-half miles long. The island is completely blanketed with lush woodland vegetation\, except for the tidal marshes. Join a CRM educator to hike and explore the plant life that inhabits the island. \nBIRDING SELDEN ISLAND\nJoin our bird guides and explore the trails of Selden Island in search of breeding birds tending their nests. This large\, but little explored island is home to breeding warblers\, vireos\, thrushes\, and more. From the wooded hills\, look out into the tidal marshes and listen for rails\, Marsh Wren\, Swamp Sparrow\, and other secretive birds. If we’re lucky\, we may get some glimpses of Bald Eagles that breed in the area. \nHISTORY OF SELDEN ISLAND HIKE\nHike to the top of the lookout\, exploring the historical sites of the island with views of the Connecticut River and Selden Creek. Look for ruins of the old farm buildings after exploring the abandoned quarry. In the late 1800s\, stone from the quarry was used as pavers across New York City. \nPhysical fitness is required\, as trail conditions may be variable and in some places could be steep. DESCRIPTION:Tired of Winter\, we sure are! How about getting out on the water in early Spring to view eagles and more? Join us aboard RiverQuest\, departing from our home berth at the Connecticut River Museum in Essex\, to search for Eagles\, Ospreys\, and other wildlife we will find in early Spring. There may still be Winter wildlife visitors to see\, mergansers\, Great Cormorants\, hawks\, maybe seals and more\, along with our resident wildlife. On our leisurely journey\, we will pass by some Bald Eagle nesting territories\, where there should be eagles nearby. Most of our Ospreys have returned from their wintering grounds and will either be nesting or very busy with their “nestorations”! Nests will be in trees along the river and on the navigation day markers. We’ll tell you all about the local wildlife we will see along with lots of other interesting stuff! Enjoy this beautiful river! \n  \nCruises are available the weekend of April 17-19\, 2026 and April 25-26\, 2026. Support the Museum’s collections and archives and enjoy lively conversation\, a delectable dinner\, and the chance to engage with one of Connecticut’s finest historians\, Amy Kurtz Lansing\, Curator at the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme\, Connecticut. \nFor over a century\, the Wiggins family of artists—Carleton\, Guy C.\, and Guy A.—recorded southeastern Connecticut’s scenic waterways\, towns\, and landscapes in their paintings. Committed teachers\, they encouraged their pupils to do the same\, most notably at the Guy Wiggins Art School that Guy C. opened in Essex during the Great Depression. Celebrating the donation of Guy C. Wiggins’s painting of a dock now belonging to the Museum\, this lecture by Amy Kurtz Lansing will illustrate the family’s artistic legacy in Connecticut\, from Old Lyme to Essex. \n  \n Amy Kurtz Lansing is a specialist in 19th-20th century American art. SUMMARY:The Famous Water Machine of Connecticut
DESCRIPTION:Special Exhibit \nThe Famous Water Machine of Connecticut: How Grit\, Determination\, and Ingenuity Launched a New Era of Submarine Warfare \nOn view: Now through July 12\, 2026 \n\nThe Connecticut River Museum is home to two Turtle submarines. One\, a replica that thousands of people step into each year. The other\, a replica commissioned at the time of the nation’s bicentennial and christened by Governor Ella Grasso. The first Turtle\, lost to the sands of time\, was constructed in secret in 1776 by David Bushnell and was used during the Revolutionary War to transport a bomb with a time delayed flintlock detonator to a British warship. The submarine was an incredible innovation for its time and\, as George Washington wrote\, “was an effort of genius.” This exhibit will showcase the innovations of its construction as we commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. \n  \nThis exhibit has been made possible through the generous support of General Dynamics Electric Boat.

During the Open House from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm\, additional 30-minute guided house tours will take place. \nAt 5:00 pm\, the multipurpose room will host a musical performance by Ben Cosgrove\, a traveling composer-performer whose music explores themes of landscape\, place\, and environment. As the Museum’s new Artist-in-Residence supported by grants funds from the Wolf Kahn Foundation\, Ben will create music inspired by the Connecticut River over the next year. This concert provides an opportunity for Ben to share his existing music and get to know members of the community. Ben will be present in the Lay Home before his performance begins\, so make sure to stop by and chat! \n  \nHayley Cann is a 200-hour certified yoga teacher specializing in Vinyasa and Hatha flow with an emphasis on rest\, restoration\, and mindful alignment. A former athlete\, she found yoga through injury and a shift toward gentler\, more intentional movement. Her teaching invites students to slow down\, reconnect to breath\, and support the nervous system while building ease and awareness in the body. Outside of teaching\, Hayley enjoys time in nature\, especially swimming and being in the water\, where she feels deeply grounded and restored. \n  \n  \nDescribed by the Boston Globe as “a sonic plein-air painter… [using] his piano as a paintbrush\,” Ben Cosgrove has performed in every U.S. state except for Delaware\, collaborated with groups ranging from rock bands to research scientists\, contributed music to several radio and film projects (including the recent Ken Burns documentary The American Buffalo)\, and held residencies and fellowships with institutions including NASA\, Acadia National Park\, White Mountain National Forest\, Isle Royale National Park\, Harvard University\, Middlebury College\, the New England National Scenic Trail\, the Schmidt Ocean Institute\, the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife & Fish Refuge\, and the Sitka Center for Art & Ecology.

Encountering a mouse\, a hare\, and a wolverine\, the little fox takes on the role of both hunter and hunted before returning to the safety of its den\, where — perhaps — it dreams of something more. \nThis January\, we’ll read Little Fox in the Snow by Jonathan London. The poetic text and Impressionistic illustrations teach young learners about the behaviors of winter wildlife. \nAfter the story\, participants will make a paper fox to bring home and enjoy a special scavenger hunt. As the season begins to change\, plants and animals begin to make plans for the cold weather! Using paper plates as the base\, children can bring their imagined landscapes to life with craft paper and populate their scenes with animal cut-outs. In 1995\, the General Assembly established the Connecticut Freedom Trail as a way to recognize African Americans’ and other minority populations’ fight for freedom and social equality in Connecticut and to mark sites that bear witness to milestones in that quest. Join Tammy Denease\, the current outreach director of the Connecticut Freedom Trail\, to learn about her experiences bringing historical sites to the CFT and the importance of preserving accurate and complete history. \n \n  \nTammy Denease is the current Outreach Director of the Connecticut Freedom Trail. As the\nowner of Hidden Women\, LLC\, she is a diversity\, equity and belonging consultant for historical organizations. Connecticut did not support the Constitutional Amendment creating Prohibition\, and violations of the law were widespread. Join historian and storyteller Mike Allen to learn more about this rebellious chapter in the state’s history and the role the Connecticut River played in bootlegging. \n \nMike Allen has lived in Connecticut for more than 50 years and specializes in bringing history to life. He is the producer and host of the podcast\, Amazing Tales About History\, featuring weekly stories about interesting people\, places\, and events. Mike’s career began as a radio news director. He became the Press Secretary to the Mayor of Danbury and later spent 25 years in an international corporate position where he specialized in communications and marketing. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \nHighclere Castle Spirits\, LLC\, known for their gin which contains “a delicate balance of juniper\, lime flower\, orange peel and a tough of lavender\,” will be tabling at this event.

Crafts will take place in the Museum’s Boathouse. A program just for kids 4+ and their caregivers\, River Tales includes a story and craft activity themed around nature. \n \nThe river’s journey takes it past beaver dams\, floodplains\, oxbow lakes\, paddle-boarders\, and bridges. Starting in the rocky peaks\, it winds its way through coniferous forest\, gushes through v-shaped valleys\, and roars down magnificent waterfalls. \nThis November\, we’ll read The River That Flows Beside Me by Charlotte Guillain\, winner of the 2024 Bank Street College of Education Best Book of the Year (Ecology) and the Good Housekeeping Best Kids Book Award 2023. With a focus on the important role waterways play in human and environmental survival\, The River That Flows Beside Me explores the changing landscapes along a river’s journey and the habits and ecosystems that call the river their home. \nQuestions? To access the live stream\, please purchase a Virtual Ticket using the link below! \nRESERVE YOUR SPOT \n  \nKnown best today for his literary masterpieces and frank observations on society\, Mark Twain was an active participant in the spiritualism craze that swept the United States during the 19th century. Throughout his life\, including the time he spent living in Hartford\, he took an interest in the spirit world through attending seances\, palm readings\, and meeting mediums. Join historian Jason Scappaticci for a lecture that explores this supernatural through the lens of one of America’s greatest literary minds. \n \nJason Scappaticci was born and raised in Manchester\, CT where he continues to live with his partner and son. After high school\, he earned his BA in History from Utica College of Syracuse University. After returning home to CT\, he enrolled in Trinity College and earned his MA in American Studies. He has a passion for history and enjoys sharing that passion with others. Some topics of particular interest for Jason are presidential history\, world fairs\, and the golden age of transatlantic passenger liners. \nJason has worked in higher education since 2003. He began his career at Manchester Community College\, working with low-income and first-generation college students. After 16 years at Manchester Community College\, Jason was named the Associate Dean of Student Affairs at Capital Community College.

To access the live stream\, please purchase a Virtual Ticket using the link above! \nJoin us for a special talk featuring one of the artists behind our Watermark: Capturing the Connecticut exhibit! During this program\, Evie Lovett will touch on the historical origins of cyanotype photography and its contemporary usages in education and fine art. \nLovett walked the watershed where she lives in Vermont\, from its headwaters in a damp spot in a forested nature preserve\, down past her home\, alongside dirt roads\, backyards\, an auto repair shop’s junked cars\, fields of corn\, beaver dams\, wetlands\, a bird “hot spot”\, the village of Putney\, Vermont\, the shuttered Putney Paper Mill (once powered by the brook)\, under I-91 and the railroad tracks\, until it reached the Connecticut River. Along the way\, she made photographs\, gathered plants\, shapes\, and patterns. Back in her studio\, she incorporated this material\, along with text\, research\, and maps\, into her art. \n  \nEvie Lovett’s work spans cyanotype\, digital and analog photography\, digital media\, storytelling\, encaustic painting\, teaching\, public art\, and social practice in art\, in multiple mediums. She is motivated to explore the spaces where people and the natural world meet and interact\, to slow down and listen to the stories that emerge when good questions are asked of people and places. Bringing a social and environmental justice and equity lens to her work is a priority. What especially fuels her is when the tools of art-making are in people’s own hands\, enabling them to explore aspects of themselves\, their families\, their communities\, and the world around them through art-making and community collaboration\, fearlessly and with joy.
