DESCRIPTION:Connecticut Sea Music Festival \nJune 12-15\, 2026 \nThe 5th Annual CT Sea Music Festival will drop anchor in historic downtown Essex on June 12-15\, 2026. As Stroll Essex Village Magazine states\, “This beloved weekend is a highlight of the season that brings our community’s nautical heritage to life.” The CT Sea Music Festival is an event put on by the Maritime Music & Tradition Society to enact its mission of preserving and encouraging maritime and traditional music through education\, research\, performance\, and community.  Through the festival they aim to share and teach stories\, roots\, and culture behind the wonderful and expansive world of maritime music\, from deepwater sailing to inland waterways. \nThe family-friendly weekend includes a Symposium on the Music of the Sea\, free daytime workshops and concerts featuring local and regional maritime performers\, a family stage\, CT River sails\, a hymn sing\, and late-night pub sings. Also included are demonstrations of sailor skills and Irish currach rowing\, a fife and drum parade on Saturday morning down Main Street\, and a Revolutionary War reenactment on the Essex Historical Society’s Pratt House grounds\, honoring America’s Semi-Quincentennial celebration. He is known for his scholarship on whaling and the history of the whaling ship the Morgan\, as well as his songs about local businesses that supported or was supported by the shipping trades. Joseph Morneault is the president of the Maritime Music & Tradition Society which features as its primary event the annual CT Sea Music Festival held in Essex\, CT. DESCRIPTION:River Cruise to the Lighthouses in Old Saybrook\, 10:00am to 12:00pm. Join us aboard RiverQuest departing from Steamboat Dock in Essex for a relaxing cruise south down the Connecticut River to view the Lynde and Outer Lighthouses by water. Observe the beautiful\, pristine river “One of the Last Great Places”\, as we cruise by the town of Essex\, ultimately reaching Old Saybrook and Old Lyme at the river mouth on Long Island Sound. We will tell you about the history\, ecology of the river and point out areas of interest and wildlife we may see. Bring your picnic basket if you’d like. \nNOTE:\nFor those taking this cruise who are USLHS Lighthouse Passport Stamp collectors\, stamps will be available for Lynde Point and Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouses on the boat or after the cruise. These two lighthouses are finally represented by USLHS stamps as of March 27\, 2020. A minimum donation to USLHS of $1 per stamped item is requested. All donations will be matched and sent to USLHS to support their lighthouse education and preservation programs. SUMMARY:RiverQuest - Selden Island Hike
DESCRIPTION:The Connecticut River Museum is excited to offer this unique experience. We will be departing on the vessel RiverQuest at 8:00am to go to Selden Neck State Park. There will be guided hikes of your choosing. Pack a lunch in your day pack to enjoy on the island. We will return to the Museum. \nSELDEN NATURE HIKE:\nSelden Neck State Park\, bordered to the east by Selden Creek and by the Connecticut River to the west\, is a 607-acre island roughly a half-mile wide and one-and-a-half miles long. The island is completely blanketed with lush woodland vegetation\, except for the tidal marshes. Join a CRM educator to hike and explore the plant life that inhabits the island. \nBIRDING SELDEN ISLAND\nJoin our bird guides and explore the trails of Selden Island in search of breeding birds tending their nests. This large\, but little explored island is home to breeding warblers\, vireos\, thrushes\, and more. From the wooded hills\, look out into the tidal marshes and listen for rails\, Marsh Wren\, Swamp Sparrow\, and other secretive birds. If we’re lucky\, we may get some glimpses of Bald Eagles that breed in the area. \nHISTORY OF SELDEN ISLAND HIKE\nHike to the top of the lookout\, exploring the historical sites of the island with views of the Connecticut River and Selden Creek. Look for ruins of the old farm buildings after exploring the abandoned quarry. In the late 1800s\, stone from the quarry was used as pavers across New York City. \nPhysical fitness is required\, as trail conditions may be variable and in some places could be steep. Sturdy footwear and a water bottle are a must. \nBOOK ONLINE

DESCRIPTION:Tired of Winter\, we sure are! How about getting out on the water in early Spring to view eagles and more? Join us aboard RiverQuest\, departing from our home berth at the Connecticut River Museum in Essex\, to search for Eagles\, Ospreys\, and other wildlife we will find in early Spring. There may still be Winter wildlife visitors to see\, mergansers\, Great Cormorants\, hawks\, maybe seals and more\, along with our resident wildlife. On our leisurely journey\, we will pass by some Bald Eagle nesting territories\, where there should be eagles nearby. Most of our Ospreys have returned from their wintering grounds and will either be nesting or very busy with their “nestorations”! Nests will be in trees along the river and on the navigation day markers. We’ll tell you all about the local wildlife we will see along with lots of other interesting stuff! Enjoy this beautiful river! \n  \nCruises are available the weekend of April 17-19\, 2026 and April 25-26\, 2026. SUMMARY:The Famous Water Machine of Connecticut
DESCRIPTION:Special Exhibit \nThe Famous Water Machine of Connecticut: How Grit\, Determination\, and Ingenuity Launched a New Era of Submarine Warfare \nOn view: Now through July 12\, 2026 \n\nThe Connecticut River Museum is home to two Turtle submarines. One\, a replica that thousands of people step into each year. The other\, a replica commissioned at the time of the nation’s bicentennial and christened by Governor Ella Grasso. The first Turtle\, lost to the sands of time\, was constructed in secret in 1776 by David Bushnell and was used during the Revolutionary War to transport a bomb with a time delayed flintlock detonator to a British warship. The submarine was an incredible innovation for its time and\, as George Washington wrote\, “was an effort of genius.” This exhibit will showcase the innovations of its construction as we commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. \n  \nThis exhibit has been made possible through the generous support of General Dynamics Electric Boat.

In celebration of recent renovations to the Lay Home\, the Museum is hosting a full day of opportunities to enjoy and explore this cornerstone of Essex. \nAt 10:00 am\, local yoga instructor Hayley Cann will lead a guided yoga session in the Lay Home’s multipurpose room. Beginners are encouraged to attend! Please bring your own yoga mat. \nFollowing yoga\, there will be a 30-minute guided house tour at 11:00 am\, led by the Museum’s Executive Director\, Elizabeth Kaeser. This program will act as a preview for future Lay Home tours and will explore the process behind telling the story of a building with rich\, layered history. During the Open House from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm\, additional 30-minute guided house tours will take place. \nAt 5:00 pm\, the multipurpose room will host a musical performance by Ben Cosgrove\, a traveling composer-performer whose music explores themes of landscape\, place\, and environment. As the Museum’s new Artist-in-Residence supported by grants funds from the Wolf Kahn Foundation\, Ben will create music inspired by the Connecticut River over the next year. This concert provides an opportunity for Ben to share his existing music and get to know members of the community. Ben will be present in the Lay Home before his performance begins\, so make sure to stop by and chat! \n  \nHayley Cann is a 200-hour certified yoga teacher specializing in Vinyasa and Hatha flow with an emphasis on rest\, restoration\, and mindful alignment. A former athlete\, she found yoga through injury and a shift toward gentler\, more intentional movement. Her teaching invites students to slow down\, reconnect to breath\, and support the nervous system while building ease and awareness in the body. Outside of teaching\, Hayley enjoys time in nature\, especially swimming and being in the water\, where she feels deeply grounded and restored. \n  \n  \nDescribed by the Boston Globe as “a sonic plein-air painter… [using] his piano as a paintbrush\,” Ben Cosgrove has performed in every U.S. state except for Delaware\, collaborated with groups ranging from rock bands to research scientists\, contributed music to several radio and film projects (including the recent Ken Burns documentary The American Buffalo)\, and held residencies and fellowships with institutions including NASA\, Acadia National Park\, White Mountain National Forest\, Isle Royale National Park\, Harvard University\, Middlebury College\, the New England National Scenic Trail\, the Schmidt Ocean Institute\, the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife & Fish Refuge\, and the Sitka Center for Art & Ecology.

DESCRIPTION:NEW DATE ADDED: Don’t miss the final Winter Wildlife Eagle Cruise of the season on Saturday\, March 28th! \nExperience the beauty and solitude of the lower Connecticut River during this wonderful time of year! It is so different than it is any other time of the year. There are no other vessels on the water\, and with no leaves on the trees\, our wildlife viewing is easy and fun. \nAs the river\, lakes and ponds to our north freeze\, Eagles and others make their way to the lower CT River for their favorite food – FISH. Join us on this approximately 2 hour “on-the-water” cruise to search for eagles and other winter wildlife. In the past we have spotted up to a record 46 eagles\, 3 types of grebes\, fox\, 3 types of swans\, 3 types of mergansers\, many different gulls\, loons\, golden eagle\, coyote\, deer\, many hawk species\, 3 types of seals\, and even a bobcat. We will have Naturalists on board to narrate and make sure you don’t miss a thing! \nRiverQuest has a heated cabin\, but we suggest that you dress in warm layers since the best views will be from the open decks. Perfect for young learners 4+ and their caregivers. Check in at the front desk upon arrival. \n \nAs days stretch longer\, animals creep out from their warm dens\, and green begins to grow again\, everyone knows― spring is on its way! \nJoin a boy and his dog as they explore nature and take a stroll through the countryside\, greeting all the signs of the coming season. In a series of conversations with everything from the melting brook to chirping birds\, they say goodbye to winter and welcome the lushness of spring. \nThis February\, we’ll read Goodbye Winter\, Hello Spring by Kenard Pak. This book is an excellent tool for young learners to explore this unique time of year for the natural world. \nAfter the story\, participants will make drawings of the four seasons and join a special scavenger hunt. Young learners and their caregivers will explore the season changes with four tree colorings that will then be glued together to form a standing 3D tree. Once the craft is finished\, children can spin their trees and experience each season\, taking them on a journey throughout the year. \nQuestions? Talking Rivers is an organization that uses ecocentric storytelling\, art\, and science to advocate for the Rights of the Upper St. Lawrence River and Adirondack watersheds of northern New York\, Haudenosaunee Territory\, and works with others locally and globally to promote the importance of listening to and taking into account the voice of rivers\, their watersheds and their human and other-than-human beings in their decision making and actions. Join environmental story-makers Blake Lavia & Tzintzun Aguilar-Izzo for a webinar that explores their organization’s blend of advocacy\, storytelling\, art\, and science. \n  \n \nBlake and Tzintzun (both they/them) are two environmental story-makers from the Talking Wings Collective\, who helped found Talking Rivers. In collaboration with Talking Rivers\, they are currently working to create spaces in which humans can unite to protect Land and Water. Blake and Tzintzun reside as settlers along the banks of Akwesasne/St. Regis River\, their friend and guardian. This River flows through New York’s North Country\, Haudenosaunee Territory\, to meet with Kaniatarowanénhne\, the Great or St. Lawrence River. \n  \nThis event will be hosted over Zoom. Check in at the front desk upon arrival. \n \nLittle foxling\, where will you go? \nA red fox emerges from its burrow one wintry morning\, a fiery streak against stark white surroundings\, driven by hunger and curiosity to investigate its world. Encountering a mouse\, a hare\, and a wolverine\, the little fox takes on the role of both hunter and hunted before returning to the safety of its den\, where — perhaps — it dreams of something more. \nThis January\, we’ll read Little Fox in the Snow by Jonathan London. The poetic text and Impressionistic illustrations teach young learners about the behaviors of winter wildlife. \nAfter the story\, participants will make a paper fox to bring home and enjoy a special scavenger hunt. Young learners and their caregivers will have the opportunity to bring the fox from the book to life by using a paper cup and craft paper to create a 3D fox. Once built\, children can explore the world around them like the fox from the book with their new creation by their side. \nQuestions? Check in at the front desk upon arrival. \n \nWhere oh where do the leaves all go when winter comes and the cold winds blow? \nWhat happens to fish\, flowers\, field mice\, and other living things when ponds freeze and the air turns blustery? Walk with a curious child and his parents as winter’s first snow falls and find out! \nThis December\, we’ll read When Winter Comes by Nancy Van Laan. As the season begins to change\, plants and animals begin to make plans for the cold weather! This book guides young learners to explore how the world changes during the coldest time of year. \nAfter the story\, participants will make their own winter landscape to take home and join a special scavenger hunt. Using paper plates as the base\, children can bring their imagined landscapes to life with craft paper and populate their scenes with animal cut-outs. But this wouldn’t be a winter landscape without snow! Cotton balls and foam sheets will be provided to add some winter magic to the scenes. To access the live stream\, please\npurchase a Virtual Ticket using the link below! \nRESERVE YOUR SPOT \n  \nThe issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 did not guarantee equal treatment and opportunities for those freed. In 1995\, the General Assembly established the Connecticut Freedom Trail as a way to recognize African Americans’ and other minority populations’ fight for freedom and social equality in Connecticut and to mark sites that bear witness to milestones in that quest. Join Tammy Denease\, the current outreach director of the Connecticut Freedom Trail\, to learn about her experiences bringing historical sites to the CFT and the importance of preserving accurate and complete history. \n \n  \nTammy Denease is the current Outreach Director of the Connecticut Freedom Trail. As the\nowner of Hidden Women\, LLC\, she is a diversity\, equity and belonging consultant for historical organizations. In her role as the Executive Artistic Director of Hidden Women Stage Company she is a writer\, producer and director of historical period plays. For the past twenty years she has been a museum educator and guide. Tammy is a Certified Interpretive Guide and also serves on the Board of Directors for The Connecticut League of Museums.
