We will be departing on the vessel RiverQuest at 8:00am to go to Selden Neck State Park. There will be 3 guided hikes of your choosing. Pack a lunch in your day pack to enjoy on the island. We will return to the Museum \nSELDEN PLANT HIKE:\nLearn about Nature Journaling. Selden Neck State Park\, bordered to the east by Selden Creek and by the Connecticut River to the west\, is a 607-acre island roughly a half-mile wide and one-and-a-half miles long. The island is completely blanketed with lush woodland vegetation\, except for the tidal marshes. Join a CRM educator to hike and explore the plant life that inhabits the island. \nBIRDING SELDEN ISLAND\nExplore the trails of Selden Island in search of breeding birds tending their nests. This large\, but little explored island is home to breeding warblers\, vireos\, thrushes\, and more. From the wooded hills\, look out into the tidal marshes and listen for rails\, Marsh Wren\, Swamp Sparrow\, and other secretive birds. If we’re lucky\, we may get some glimpses of Bald Eagles that breed in the area. \nSELDEN ISLAND HIKE\nHike to the top of the lookout\, exploring the historical sites of the island with views of the Connecticut River and Selden Creek. Look for ruins of the old farm buildings after exploring the abandoned quarry. In the late 1800s\, stone from the quarry was used as pavers across New York City. \nPhysical fitness is required\, as trail conditions may be variable and in some places could be steep. Sturdy footwear and a water bottle are a must. \nBOOK ONLINE URL:https://ctrivermuseum.org/events/riverquest-selden-island-hike/ LOCATION:CT CATEGORIES:Cruises ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://ctrivermuseum.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/SeldenHike.png END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20240515T180000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20240515T190000 DTSTAMP:20240328T173740 CREATED:20240111T134420Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240116T151131Z UID:7859-1715796000-1715799600@ctrivermuseum.org SUMMARY:Andrew Fisk presents Generating Challenges: Hydropower on the Connecticut River DESCRIPTION:Live from the Boathouse! \nAndrew Fisk presents Generating Challenges: Hydropower on the Connecticut River \n6:00 – 7:00 pm \nMembers: FREE (please use the ticket reservation link to reserve your spot) \nNon-Members: $5.00 \n  \n \nThere are a total of sixteen large dams along the Connecticut River\, and more than a hundred small hydropower plants across the entire watershed. These facilities have the capability to produce up to 470 megawatts of power in total\, and hydroelectric power production offers many benefits to the power industry. However\, dams also present significant dangers to river health: they impede the movement of fish and damage the natural landscape in numerous ways. Join Andrew Fisk\, Northeast Regional Director for American Rivers\, for a lively presentation on the development of hydroelectric dams in the Connecticut River watershed\, the technology behind them\, and their consequences\, both good and bad\, for our state. Light refreshments will be provided. \n  \nAndrew Fisk has worked in conservation across New England for over 25 years\, serving in roles across Maine and Connecticut state government\, and holding the position of Executive Director of the Connecticut River Conservancy for over 11 years. He is energized by working with local communities to find environmental problems and fix them so that everyone can be sustained by the benefits of nature. \nThe Connecticut River Museum may record this event\, including all questions\, comments\, etc. by the audience.
