Swing by each Thursday evening in July and August\, bring a chair or blanket\, listen to a free concert\, and watch the sun go down over the river. \nBards of Gungywamp is a folk group from southeastern CT\, whose music is a blend of Celtic\, Bluegrass\, Chanteys\, Country\, Cajun and Original music drawing on history and folk tales. After playing together in different factions for many years\, the members formed late one winter for a hometown St. Patrick’s gig. They have since commenced traveling the mountains and valleys of New England and beyond\, bringing their tunes to Irish Pubs\, Renn Faires\, Festivals\, Farm Markets\, and more. With sawing fiddle dance melodies and enchanting vocal harmonies\, BOG is a group of true Bards\, carrying on traditional songs from hundreds of years ago and bringing new stories to the table. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please check our site. No stranger to sea music audiences\, he spent over 5 years as a Mystic Seaport Chanteyman. As part of the Seaport Interpretation Department\, he presented music programs for both educational and social functions. He has worked as a musician and educator for the Clearwater program on the Hudson River\, and has sailed as cook\, deck hand\, and entertainer on numerous traditional sailing vessels from the coast of Maine to Chesapeake Bay. \nAs an accomplished percussionist\, he is much in demand to play Frottior (rubboard) with many of the Northeast’s most highly respected Cajun and Zydeco bands\, and he has played the Bodhran with several prominent Irish music\nperformers. \nWhen accompanying himself on songs he is equally at home with Guitar\, Mandolin\, and Tenor Banjo. Marc has also been active in Connecticut’s Fife & Drum community since his teenage years\, when he began playing in various traditional and progressive ensembles. His notoriety as a fifer has brought him invitations to perform throughout North America and Europe. \nMarc has played Skip Healy’s fifes for years\, and he works in Flute and Fife construction with The Healy Flute Company.\n\nONRUST\nOnrust is a re-creation of the vessel Adriaen Block built in 1614. As Stroll Essex Village Magazine states\, “This beloved weekend is a highlight of the season that brings our community’s nautical heritage to life.” The CT Sea Music Festival is an event put on by the Maritime Music & Tradition Society to enact its mission of preserving and encouraging maritime and traditional music through education\, research\, performance\, and community.  Through the festival they aim to share and teach stories\, roots\, and culture behind the wonderful and expansive world of maritime music\, from deepwater sailing to inland waterways. \nThe family-friendly weekend includes a Symposium on the Music of the Sea\, free daytime workshops and concerts featuring local and regional maritime performers\, a family stage\, CT River sails\, a hymn sing\, and late-night pub sings. Also included are demonstrations of sailor skills and Irish currach rowing\, a fife and drum parade on Saturday morning down Main Street\, and a Revolutionary War reenactment on the Essex Historical Society’s Pratt House grounds\, honoring America’s Semi-Quincentennial celebration. Join us aboard RiverQuest departing from Steamboat Dock in Essex for a relaxing cruise south down the Connecticut River to view the Lynde and Outer Lighthouses by water. Observe the beautiful\, pristine river “One of the Last Great Places”\, as we cruise by the town of Essex\, ultimately reaching Old Saybrook and Old Lyme at the river mouth on Long Island Sound. We will tell you about the history\, ecology of the river and point out areas of interest and wildlife we may see. Bring your picnic basket if you’d like. \nNOTE:\nFor those taking this cruise who are USLHS Lighthouse Passport Stamp collectors\, stamps will be available for Lynde Point and Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouses on the boat or after the cruise. These two lighthouses are finally represented by USLHS stamps as of March 27\, 2020. A minimum donation to USLHS of $1 per stamped item is requested. All donations will be matched and sent to USLHS to support their lighthouse education and preservation programs. DESCRIPTION:The Connecticut River Museum is excited to offer this unique experience. We will be departing on the vessel RiverQuest at 8:00am to go to Selden Neck State Park. There will be guided hikes of your choosing. Pack a lunch in your day pack to enjoy on the island. We will return to the Museum. \nSELDEN NATURE HIKE:\nSelden Neck State Park\, bordered to the east by Selden Creek and by the Connecticut River to the west\, is a 607-acre island roughly a half-mile wide and one-and-a-half miles long. The island is completely blanketed with lush woodland vegetation\, except for the tidal marshes. Join a CRM educator to hike and explore the plant life that inhabits the island. \nBIRDING SELDEN ISLAND\nJoin our bird guides and explore the trails of Selden Island in search of breeding birds tending their nests. This large\, but little explored island is home to breeding warblers\, vireos\, thrushes\, and more. From the wooded hills\, look out into the tidal marshes and listen for rails\, Marsh Wren\, Swamp Sparrow\, and other secretive birds. If we’re lucky\, we may get some glimpses of Bald Eagles that breed in the area. \nHISTORY OF SELDEN ISLAND HIKE\nHike to the top of the lookout\, exploring the historical sites of the island with views of the Connecticut River and Selden Creek. Look for ruins of the old farm buildings after exploring the abandoned quarry. In the late 1800s\, stone from the quarry was used as pavers across New York City. \nPhysical fitness is required\, as trail conditions may be variable and in some places could be steep. During college\, he assisted with graduate research on migrating songbirds and seabirds and turned to sustainable food systems after graduating. After college\, he worked as an AmeriCorps VISTA for two years focusing on local agriculture. Joe leads many of the RTP Estuary Center’s bird-focused community programs and webinars and assists in teaching their K-12 education programs and family programs.

SUMMARY:2026 Osprey/Eagle Cruises on RiverQuest
DESCRIPTION:Tired of Winter\, we sure are! How about getting out on the water in early Spring to view eagles and more? Join us aboard RiverQuest\, departing from our home berth at the Connecticut River Museum in Essex\, to search for Eagles\, Ospreys\, and other wildlife we will find in early Spring. There may still be Winter wildlife visitors to see\, mergansers\, Great Cormorants\, hawks\, maybe seals and more\, along with our resident wildlife. On our leisurely journey\, we will pass by some Bald Eagle nesting territories\, where there should be eagles nearby. Most of our Ospreys have returned from their wintering grounds and will either be nesting or very busy with their “nestorations”! Nests will be in trees along the river and on the navigation day markers. We’ll tell you all about the local wildlife we will see along with lots of other interesting stuff! Enjoy this beautiful river! \n  \nCruises are available the weekend of April 17-19\, 2026 and April 25-26\, 2026. Support the Museum’s collections and archives and enjoy lively conversation\, a delectable dinner\, and the chance to engage with one of Connecticut’s finest historians\, Amy Kurtz Lansing\, Curator at the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme\, Connecticut. \nFor over a century\, the Wiggins family of artists—Carleton\, Guy C.\, and Guy A.—recorded southeastern Connecticut’s scenic waterways\, towns\, and landscapes in their paintings. Committed teachers\, they encouraged their pupils to do the same\, most notably at the Guy Wiggins Art School that Guy C. opened in Essex during the Great Depression. Celebrating the donation of Guy C. Wiggins’s painting of a dock now belonging to the Museum\, this lecture by Amy Kurtz Lansing will illustrate the family’s artistic legacy in Connecticut\, from Old Lyme to Essex. \n  \n Amy Kurtz Lansing is a specialist in 19th-20th century American art. DESCRIPTION:Special Exhibit \nThe Famous Water Machine of Connecticut: How Grit\, Determination\, and Ingenuity Launched a New Era of Submarine Warfare \nOn view: Now through July 12\, 2026 \n\nThe Connecticut River Museum is home to two Turtle submarines. One\, a replica that thousands of people step into each year. The other\, a replica commissioned at the time of the nation’s bicentennial and christened by Governor Ella Grasso. The first Turtle\, lost to the sands of time\, was constructed in secret in 1776 by David Bushnell and was used during the Revolutionary War to transport a bomb with a time delayed flintlock detonator to a British warship. The submarine was an incredible innovation for its time and\, as George Washington wrote\, “was an effort of genius.” This exhibit will showcase the innovations of its construction as we commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. \n  \nThis exhibit has been made possible through the generous support of General Dynamics Electric Boat.
