SUMMARY:Connecticut Myths and Legends
DESCRIPTION:Connecticut Myths and Legends\nA lecture featuring author and illustrator Patrick Scalisi and Valerie Ruby-Omen\nSaturday\, February 8\, 2025\n5 pm – 6 pm \nSIGN UP HERE! \nNon-members: $5 \nMembers: FREE! \n  \nJoin author Patrick Scalisi and artist Valeria Ruby-Omen for a talk about their book\, Connecticut Cryptids. Pat and Val did extensive research on creature folklore from throughout the state. They’ll explain the concepts of “cryptozoology” and “cryptids\,” followed by a live storytelling session about the Connecticut River Serpent. There will also be time for questions and a chance to purchase signed books and prints from the creators. \n  \n \nA native of Naugatuck\, Pat achieved a certificate in Cryptid Field Observation Studies from Nutmeg State University. His primary focus is on composing written notes of cryptid behavior and appearance while examining these creatures in their native habitats. Aside from his cryptid research\, Pat has been known to write about much more fanciful topics like fantasy worlds and outer space. His youth sci-fi novel\, The Key to the Universe\, is available from Owl Hollow Press. \n  \n  \n  \n \nValerie is a professional artist who earned a certificate in Cryptid Illustrative Works from Constitution State College. Her love for the glorious state parks and natural wonders of Connecticut led her deep into the woods\, where she found her true calling as a cryptid field artist. With her work of cataloging every Connecticut cryptid now complete\, she plans on taking a quick break to sample an iced latte from every coffee shop in the state. When Valeria isn’t creating art\, you can find her moonlighting on various projects at the Tiny Ruby Illustrations.

Join Christine Cummings from A Place Called Hope (a Raptor Rehabilitation and Education Center based in Killingworth\, CT) and Nicole Rivard from Friends of Animals for an exploration of why poisons don’t solve pest problems and how to apply long term strategies that solve the issue without harming our local wildlife. \n  \n \n  \nChristine Cummings has devoted her adult life to Wildlife Rehabilitation since 2005. In 2007\, A Place Called Hope was founded\, with the mission of preserving wildlife for the future. As a State and Federally licensed Bird of Prey Wildlife Rehabilitator\, Christine admits on average 500-600 patients per year. Her daily routine consists of catering to the needs of injured\, orphaned\, or sick birds of prey\, as well as the 40 resident ambassador birds who call ACPH home. Christine hopes to promote a better understanding of ways we can all coexist with the wildlife we find in our very own backyards. \n  \n  \n \nNicole Rivard started working at Friends of Animals in 2013. She brings 28 years of journalism experience to FoA’s Action Line magazine and to the front lines— protesting and documenting atrocities against animals exploited by the carriage horse\, fur and hunting industries\, as well as the Bureau of Land Management’s mismanagement of America’s wild horses. Nicole also helps direct FoA’s legislative outreach and is currently working on banning second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides in CT. She enjoys photography\, wildlife watching and wild places. She can be reached at nrivard@friendsofanimals.org. \n  \n  \nThe Connecticut River Museum may record this event\, including all questions\, comments\, etc. by the audience. By participating\, you agree to allow the recording to be posted on the Connecticut River Museum’s website\, Facebook page\, Instagram feed\, and other media.
