SUMMARY:Homeschool Day: Little Universes
DESCRIPTION:APRIL: Little Universes—Thursday 4.10.25 \nIt’s easy to see the birds and fish that call the Connecticut River home\, but that’s a fraction of the life supported by the River. There’s a whole universe of teeny-tiny creatures that are too small to see with your eyes alone. If you’re curious about all the things you can’t usually see in the River\, take part in this hands-on lesson to peek into the lives of insects\, baby insects\, and microscopic critters that call the Connecticut River home! \nCurriculum Connection: With a strong focus on interconnections of ecosystems\, learners will explore the hidden world of life science through observation and identification\, microscopic inquiry\, and observational drawing. \n  \nUpcoming Homeschool Days: \nMAY: Onrust Voyage—Wednesday 5.14.25

SUMMARY:Homeschool Day: Spring Onrust Voyage
DESCRIPTION:MAY: Onrust Voyage—Wednesday 5.14.25 \nStep aboard and travel in time–all the way back to 1614\, when Dutch explorer Adrien Block sailed up the Connecticut River. Learn the ins and outs of historic sailing ships and find your sea legs (or should we say River legs) on the Museum’s replica of the Onrust. At the end of the lesson\, we’ll look at a ship’s log from our archive and create our very own to bring home! \nCurriculum Connection: Learners will get hands-on experience with 17th-century Dutch and colonial life aboard the Onrust. We will explore the impact of European exploration on the local tribal nations as well as the environmental impact of settler communities.

SUMMARY:Live from the Boathouse! : Ben James presents Life and Loss Along the Connecticut River
DESCRIPTION:Live from the Boathouse!\nBen James presents Life and Loss Along the Connecticut River\nWednesday\, April 9\, 2025\n6 – 7 pm \nIn-person and Virtual Pricing:\nMembers: FREE (please use the ticket reservation link to reserve your spot)\nNon-Members: $5.00 \nThis lecture will be available in person and over Zoom. To access the live stream\, please purchase a Virtual Ticket using the link below! \nRESERVE YOUR SPOT \n  \nBen James started an ambitious journey just before Memorial Day in 2024 with little more than a camera and a microphone. His plan: to bike from the source of the Connecticut River to its mouth\, taking photos and interviewing people he met along the way. At a moment when he felt so much seemed to be unraveling\, he wanted to give his full attention to people whose stories are not often told. Join Ben at the Connecticut River Museum to hear the story of his journey and the colorful\, emotional and often surprising picture it paints of life along the River. \nBen James is an award-winning audio and print journalist based in western Massachusetts. His stories have aired on NPR’s Morning Edition\, All Things Considered\, and on numerous podcasts and radio stations. His essays and articles have been published in The Atlantic\, Kenyon Review\, and other magazines and journals. He won a 2023 national Edward R. Murrow Award for his radio work. In the summer of 2024\, he rode his bicycle the length of the Connecticut River\, conducting extensive interviews along the way on politics\, jobs\, and environmental issues. The project resulted in a multi-part series broadcast on public radio stations across New England. He teaches journalism at Northfield Mount Hermon High School. \n  \n

SUMMARY:River Tales: The Day the River Caught Fire
DESCRIPTION:River Tales\nSaturday\, April 5\, 2025\n11 am – 12 pm and 1 – 2 pm \nSIGN UP HERE! \nNon-members: $3 per learner\nMembers: FREE!\nMuseum admission is not included with ticket purchase. \n  \nSwing by the Connecticut River Museum for take-home craft activities that engage kids with the Connecticut River’s stunning wildlife and rich history! Crafts will take place in the Museum’s Boathouse. A program just for kids 4+ and their caregivers\, River Tales includes a story and craft activity themed around nature. \n \nAfter the Industrial Revolution in the 1880s\, the Cayuhoga River in Cleveland\, Ohio\, caught fire almost twenty times\, earning Cleveland the nickname “The Mistake on the Lake.” Waste dumping had made fires so routine that Cleveland residents laughed off their combustible river and even wrote songs about it. But when the river ignited again in June 1969\, it motivated people to protect and clean up our rivers. \nIn honor of Earth Day this April\, we’ll read The Day the River Caught Fire by award-winning author Barry Wittenstein. Young learners will learn about the importance of protecting our waterways and discover the true story of how a 1969 fire in one of the most polluted rivers in America sparked the national Earth Day movement. \nQuestions? Email astromberger@ctrivermuseum.org. \n  \nThe Connecticut River Museum may photograph this event. By participating\, you agree to allow photos to be posted on the Connecticut River Museum’s website\, Facebook page\, Instagram feed\, and other media. \n  \nUpcoming River Tales Programs: \nSaturday\, May 3\, 2025 \nSaturday\, June 7\, 2025 \nSaturday\, July 5\, 2025

SUMMARY:River Ballads\, Artwork by Barbara Hocker
DESCRIPTION:River Ballads\, Artwork by Barbara Hocker \nMarch 18 – May 18\, 2025 \n  \nBarbara Hocker is a Connecticut artist inspired by her practice of Tai Chi to create books and encaustic prints that capture moments and details of nature by combining digital photographs and mixed water-based media. She tries to capture the fleeting imperfection of Wabi Sabi in her artwork. Barbara grew up between the beach and saltwater marsh\, now haunts the local lakes\, rivers\, streams\, and waterfalls for inspiration. The works in River Ballads sing of rivers\, many inspired by the tidal reach of the Connecticut River.

SUMMARY:Connecticut Myths and Legends
DESCRIPTION:Connecticut Myths and Legends\nA lecture featuring author and illustrator Patrick Scalisi and Valerie Ruby-Omen\nSaturday\, February 8\, 2025\n5 pm – 6 pm \nSIGN UP HERE! \nNon-members: $5 \nMembers: FREE! \n  \nJoin author Patrick Scalisi and artist Valeria Ruby-Omen for a talk about their book\, Connecticut Cryptids. Pat and Val did extensive research on creature folklore from throughout the state. They’ll explain the concepts of “cryptozoology” and “cryptids\,” followed by a live storytelling session about the Connecticut River Serpent. There will also be time for questions and a chance to purchase signed books and prints from the creators. \n  \n \nA native of Naugatuck\, Pat achieved a certificate in Cryptid Field Observation Studies from Nutmeg State University. His primary focus is on composing written notes of cryptid behavior and appearance while examining these creatures in their native habitats. Aside from his cryptid research\, Pat has been known to write about much more fanciful topics like fantasy worlds and outer space. His youth sci-fi novel\, The Key to the Universe\, is available from Owl Hollow Press. \n  \n  \n  \n \nValerie is a professional artist who earned a certificate in Cryptid Illustrative Works from Constitution State College. Her love for the glorious state parks and natural wonders of Connecticut led her deep into the woods\, where she found her true calling as a cryptid field artist. With her work of cataloging every Connecticut cryptid now complete\, she plans on taking a quick break to sample an iced latte from every coffee shop in the state. When Valeria isn’t creating art\, you can find her moonlighting on various projects at the Tiny Ruby Illustrations.
