DESCRIPTION:Special Exhibit\nRhythm of the River: Music and Memory Along the Connecticut\nOn view: July 30\, 2026 — October 11\, 2026 \nRhythm of the River examines the Connecticut River and its surrounding valley as an acoustic space\, exploring both the sounds of human life along the River and the natural sounds of the River and its wildlife. The story of these rhythms is expressed through original art\, photographs\, sheet music\, sound recordings\, and more. Explore displays of musical instruments and other objects\, such as steam whistles and dinner chimes that were used on the luxurious steamboats which took passengers on excursions up and down the River. \nLearn more here. \n  \nThis exhibit has been made possible through the generous support of The Robert F. Schumann Foundation and Connecticut Water.

After spending the day miles away\, the swallows return each night to sleep in the reeds. They gather at sunset and perform aerial ballets forming an amazing display of art\, coordination and cooperation! \nEnjoy the entire evening! We will spend 2+ hours on the water aboard Onrust. \nThis sail is primarily to see the Tree Swallows\, however\, it is also about the journey….there is so much to see while sailing along the river. \nThis is a small group experience that is unique each sailing. Virtual attendees will be sent the live stream link after purchasing a Virtual Ticket. \nRESERVE YOUR SPOT \nDavid Bushnell of Saybrook built the first combat submarine in 1776 and deployed it in New York Harbor to attack British warships. The Turtle carried Bushnell’s primary invention — a highly destructive underwater mine. The Turtle was the forerunner of modern submarine warfare. Join us to learn about this engineering marvel! \nRoy R. Manstan is co-author of the book: “Turtle: David Bushnell’s Revolutionary Vessel.” He was a mechanical engineer and former Command Diving Officer of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center\, and he has degrees from Lafayette College\, the University of Connecticut\, and Connecticut College. \nFred Fresé constructed the first Turtle replica in 1976\, which is currently housed at the Connecticut River Museum in Essex\, CT. The second replica he constructed with high school students of Old Saybrook High School\, is on display at Westbrook Town Hall. Fred received his teaching degree from Central Connecticut State University\, and was a technical arts teacher at Old Saybrook High School.

Virtual attendees will be sent the live stream link after purchasing a Virtual Ticket. \nRESERVE YOUR SPOT \nWe know that the Connecticut River divides Red Sox and Yankee fans\, but did you know it also determined Connecticut’s revolutionary outlook?  There existed in the colony a distinct East of the River or West of the River outlook on everything from economics to religion to land availability\, all of which shaped a violent and politically driven revolt on the part of the East.  Join Matt Warshauer as he presents this lecture to learn more! \nMatt Warshauer is a CSU (CT State University) Distinguished Professor of History at Central Connecticut State University\, where he received his bachelor’s degree in American Studies. Fascinated by what he calls “the American paradox\,” the ever-challenging conundrum between the nation’s founding document and the difficulties of pursuing essential ideas of freedom\, Warshauer pursued an MA and Ph.D. at Saint Louis University. He has spent the last 40 years exploring the great American experiment in self-government. The author of six books and countless articles and reviews\, Warshauer has written extensively on Andrew Jackson\, slavery and the Civil War\, and\, most recently\, 9/11 and how the most important and devastating event of the 21st century has impacted the world in which we live. Creating and Failing the 9/11 Generation: The Real Story of September 11 was released from Routledge Press. He is currently studying the Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War era\, as the 250th anniversary allows the nation to reflect on the origins and meaning of America. With a unique ability to draw in his audience\, Warshauer guides listeners through the complexities of American\npolitical and constitutional history so that we can all think more clearly and gain a better of understanding of our role as citizens.

Based in part on her new book Awakenings and Revolutions: The Harts\, Saybrook\, and the New Nation\, historian Elizabeth Normen will talk about the Connecticut River’s maritime contributions to the Revolutionary War. She’ll discuss the Connecticut State Navy\, privateering\, the local loyalist-on-patriot action known as the whaleboat wars\, and more. \nSigned copies of Awakenings and Revolutions: The Harts\, Saybrook\, and the New Nation will be available for sale in the museum shop.
