It was 1972\, and Tom Stevens—historian\, former director of the Mystic Seaport and Deep River resident—was enjoying his usual Friday bowl of chowder when Bill Winterer\, owner of the Griswold Inn\, stopped at Stevens’ table to chat. Winterer and his wife\, Victoria\, had recently bought the old warehouse at the foot of Main Street known as Steamboat Dock. Winterer described his plans for the property. “That is the most historic property on the Connecticut River\,” Stevens said. “It deserves something better than yet another commercialization.” Winterer mentioned the idea to Vicky\, whose field is historic preservation\, and got an immediate enthusiastic response. Thus\, the idea of preserving the property and the rich history surrounding it became both a hope and an aspiration. It emerged as a considerable challenge but community support was strong. In 1974\, Bill Winterer organized a group of active citizens at the Gris. Soon thereafter\, the Connecticut River Foundation came into being. The story of the Museum and River are intertwined and ongoing. Share your stories of the Museum and the River and help of celebrate 50 years! \n  \nOral History Project: Share Your Story\n \n \nAs the Connecticut River Museum looks back over 50 years and looks ahead to our next 50\, we want to hear from you. From facilitating prisoner exchanges to outfitting privateers that preyed on British shipping in Long Island Sound\, Webb was actively engaged in the war effort. We will return to the Museum \nSELDEN PLANT HIKE:\nLearn about Nature Journaling. Selden Neck State Park\, bordered to the east by Selden Creek and by the Connecticut River to the west\, is a 607-acre island roughly a half-mile wide and one-and-a-half miles long. The island is completely blanketed with lush woodland vegetation\, except for the tidal marshes. Join a CRM educator to hike and explore the plant life that inhabits the island. \nBIRDING SELDEN ISLAND\nExplore the trails of Selden Island in search of breeding birds tending their nests. This large\, but little explored island is home to breeding warblers\, vireos\, thrushes\, and more. From the wooded hills\, look out into the tidal marshes and listen for rails\, Marsh Wren\, Swamp Sparrow\, and other secretive birds. If we’re lucky\, we may get some glimpses of Bald Eagles that breed in the area. \nSELDEN ISLAND HIKE\nHike to the top of the lookout\, exploring the historical sites of the island with views of the Connecticut River and Selden Creek. Look for ruins of the old farm buildings after exploring the abandoned quarry. In the late 1800s\, stone from the quarry was used as pavers across New York City. \nPhysical fitness is required\, as trail conditions may be variable and in some places could be steep.
