This watercolor painting features a bell buoy in the foreground and will be displayed in the Rhythm of the River exhibit.  \nMembers-Only Exhibit Celebration\nRhythm of the River: Music and Memory Along the Connecticut\nAugust 6\, 2026\n4:30 pm – 6:30 pm \nJoin us in the Boathouse for light bites and beverages as we celebrate the opening of this exciting new exhibition\, Rhythm of the River: Music and Memory Along the Connecticut.  \nRhythm of the River examines the Connecticut River and its surrounding valley as an acoustic space\, exploring both the sounds of human life along the River and the natural sounds of the River and its wildlife. The story of these rhythms is expressed through original art\, photographs\, sheet music\, sound recordings\, and more. Explore displays of musical instruments and other objects\, such as steam whistles and dinner chimes that were used on the luxurious steamboats which took passengers on excursions up and down the River. \nThis special exhibit will connect visitors with the sounds of the Connecticut River with interactive opportunities to contribute to the rhythm of the River. Don’t miss out on this exclusive opportunity to celebrate the opening of this wonderful exhibit! \n  \nThis exhibit has been made possible through the generous support of The Schumann Foundation and Connecticut Water.

Check in at the front desk upon arrival. \n \nThis August\, in collaboration with the Museum’s new special exhibit\, Rhythm of the River\, we will be reading The Rhythm of the Rain\, a picture book from Greenaway medal-winner\, Grahame Baker-Smith. The book begins with Isaac\, a little boy playing by his favorite pond\, emptying a jar of water into the pond. The story follows the water from his jar as it travels around the world\, explaining the water cycle with beautiful illustrations and capturing the remarkable movement of water across the earth in all its majesty. \nAfter the story\, young learners and their caregivers will explore the rhythm of the water cycle by making their own Water Cycle Spinner. Using just paper plates\, brass brads\, and markers\, you can create and explore your own journey from vapor in the sky to water in the river down below. \nQuestions? Swing by each Thursday evening in July and August\, bring a chair or blanket\, listen to a free concert\, and watch the sun go down over the river. \nBards of Gungywamp is a folk group from southeastern CT\, whose music is a blend of Celtic\, Bluegrass\, Chanteys\, Country\, Cajun and Original music drawing on history and folk tales. After playing together in different factions for many years\, the members formed late one winter for a hometown St. Patrick’s gig. They have since commenced traveling the mountains and valleys of New England and beyond\, bringing their tunes to Irish Pubs\, Renn Faires\, Festivals\, Farm Markets\, and more. With sawing fiddle dance melodies and enchanting vocal harmonies\, BOG is a group of true Bards\, carrying on traditional songs from hundreds of years ago and bringing new stories to the table. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please check our site. Swing by each Thursday evening in July and August\, bring a chair or blanket\, listen to a free concert\, and watch the sun go down over the river. \nJoin us for a performance by the 10-piece classic jazz band\, Central City Stompers. The music that they play is often called “Classic Jazz”; mostly popular tunes from the first half of the 20th century with liberal doses of blues and ragtime. Some call it “Dixieland”\, or “Hot Jazz”\, or “New Orleans Style”. Their inspirations include King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band\, Turk Murphy’s Jazz band\, the South Frisco Jazz Band\, the Yerba Buena Stompers\, and many other bands that can still be heard today at traditional jazz festivals all over the world. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please check our site. No stranger to sea music audiences\, he spent over 5 years as a Mystic Seaport Chanteyman. As part of the Seaport Interpretation Department\, he presented music programs for both educational and social functions. He has worked as a musician and educator for the Clearwater program on the Hudson River\, and has sailed as cook\, deck hand\, and entertainer on numerous traditional sailing vessels from the coast of Maine to Chesapeake Bay. \nAs an accomplished percussionist\, he is much in demand to play Frottior (rubboard) with many of the Northeast’s most highly respected Cajun and Zydeco bands\, and he has played the Bodhran with several prominent Irish music\nperformers. \nWhen accompanying himself on songs he is equally at home with Guitar\, Mandolin\, and Tenor Banjo. Marc has also been active in Connecticut’s Fife & Drum community since his teenage years\, when he began playing in various traditional and progressive ensembles. His notoriety as a fifer has brought him invitations to perform throughout North America and Europe. \nMarc has played Skip Healy’s fifes for years\, and he works in Flute and Fife construction with The Healy Flute Company.\n\nONRUST\nOnrust is a re-creation of the vessel Adriaen Block built in 1614. As Stroll Essex Village Magazine states\, “This beloved weekend is a highlight of the season that brings our community’s nautical heritage to life.” The CT Sea Music Festival is an event put on by the Maritime Music & Tradition Society to enact its mission of preserving and encouraging maritime and traditional music through education\, research\, performance\, and community.  Through the festival they aim to share and teach stories\, roots\, and culture behind the wonderful and expansive world of maritime music\, from deepwater sailing to inland waterways. \nThe family-friendly weekend includes a Symposium on the Music of the Sea\, free daytime workshops and concerts featuring local and regional maritime performers\, a family stage\, CT River sails\, a hymn sing\, and late-night pub sings. Also included are demonstrations of sailor skills and Irish currach rowing\, a fife and drum parade on Saturday morning down Main Street\, and a Revolutionary War reenactment on the Essex Historical Society’s Pratt House grounds\, honoring America’s Semi-Quincentennial celebration. Sail aboard the Onrust with the performers! \n  \nShanties & Sails are back! This five-week live music performance series has a different performance each week and runs from 5:30 pm until 7:45 pm. Come down to the Museum to enjoy a FREE one-hour live performance of Sea Shanties! Add onto your evening to continue the fun and book a trip on Onrust for an intimate acoustic one-hour performance with the featured artist(s). \n  \nPURCHASE TICKETS \n  \nThe Johnson Girls \nThe Johnson Girls is an energetic all-woman a cappella ensemble\, performing traditional and contemporary music with an emphasis on songs of the sea and shore. With a sound that has been called “exciting\,” “haunting\,” and “uplifting\,” they give powerhouse performances that bring audiences to their feet wherever they go. The Johnson Girls have performed at major festivals\, clubs\, coffeehouses\, and more across the United States\, Canada\, the UK\, Ireland\, and Europe\, and have performed live on Oscar Brand’s radio show\, France Bleu radio and appeared on French TV. \nEach of The Johnson Girls brings a specialty and style to the ensemble.  Their extensive repertoire includes songs with an Afro-Caribbean influence\, of the inland waterways\, of fishing\, mining\, Irish\, Anglo-American\, Italian\, French\, and Canadian ballads and work songs\, and much more.  The Johnson Girls bring a unique interpretation to their repertoire while preserving the traditional roots of their music. \nONRUST\nOnrust is a re-creation of the vessel Adriaen Block built in 1614. Built over several years in upstate New York using traditional plans and means\, the Onrust is a wholly unique ship that serves to educate and entertain visitors curious about the age of exploration\, the fur trade\, and our early colonial history. She is available for public cruises as well as private charters.

SUMMARY:RiverQuest Lighthouse Cruise to Old Saybrook
DESCRIPTION:River Cruise to the Lighthouses in Old Saybrook\, 10:00am to 12:00pm. Join us aboard RiverQuest departing from Steamboat Dock in Essex for a relaxing cruise south down the Connecticut River to view the Lynde and Outer Lighthouses by water. Observe the beautiful\, pristine river “One of the Last Great Places”\, as we cruise by the town of Essex\, ultimately reaching Old Saybrook and Old Lyme at the river mouth on Long Island Sound. We will tell you about the history\, ecology of the river and point out areas of interest and wildlife we may see. Bring your picnic basket if you’d like. \nNOTE:\nFor those taking this cruise who are USLHS Lighthouse Passport Stamp collectors\, stamps will be available for Lynde Point and Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouses on the boat or after the cruise. These two lighthouses are finally represented by USLHS stamps as of March 27\, 2020. A minimum donation to USLHS of $1 per stamped item is requested. All donations will be matched and sent to USLHS to support their lighthouse education and preservation programs. SUMMARY:RiverQuest - Selden Island Hike
DESCRIPTION:The Connecticut River Museum is excited to offer this unique experience. We will be departing on the vessel RiverQuest at 8:00am to go to Selden Neck State Park. There will be guided hikes of your choosing. Pack a lunch in your day pack to enjoy on the island. We will return to the Museum. \nSELDEN NATURE HIKE:\nSelden Neck State Park\, bordered to the east by Selden Creek and by the Connecticut River to the west\, is a 607-acre island roughly a half-mile wide and one-and-a-half miles long. The island is completely blanketed with lush woodland vegetation\, except for the tidal marshes. Join a CRM educator to hike and explore the plant life that inhabits the island. \nBIRDING SELDEN ISLAND\nJoin our bird guides and explore the trails of Selden Island in search of breeding birds tending their nests. This large\, but little explored island is home to breeding warblers\, vireos\, thrushes\, and more. From the wooded hills\, look out into the tidal marshes and listen for rails\, Marsh Wren\, Swamp Sparrow\, and other secretive birds. If we’re lucky\, we may get some glimpses of Bald Eagles that breed in the area. \nHISTORY OF SELDEN ISLAND HIKE\nHike to the top of the lookout\, exploring the historical sites of the island with views of the Connecticut River and Selden Creek. Look for ruins of the old farm buildings after exploring the abandoned quarry. In the late 1800s\, stone from the quarry was used as pavers across New York City. \nPhysical fitness is required\, as trail conditions may be variable and in some places could be steep. Sturdy footwear and a water bottle are a must. \nBOOK ONLINE

Check in at the front desk upon arrival. \n \nJoin us for a spring-themed River Tales to read Whose Nest?\, written by Victoria Cochrane\, and illustrated by Guy Troughton. Can you guess whose nest? Take a peek into the nest and look at the clues that surround it —a feather\, a footprint\, a tasty food morsel — then turn the page to find out who really lives there. The animals depicted include a dormouse\, a tree frog\, an eagle\, a rabbit\, a mallard\, and a bumblebee. \nA program just for kids 4+ and their caregivers\, River Tales includes a story\, a craft activity\, and an opportunity to get out on the dock to see some birds! \nAll River Tales reservations include Museum admission for one adult and one child and must be purchased in advance.
