DESCRIPTION:Thursdays on the Dock\nCentral City Stompers\nThursday\, July 16\, 2026\n5:30 – 7:30 pm \n  \nThursdays on the Dock has been a shoreline staple for 17 years and remains the premier destination for waterfront music. Swing by each Thursday evening in July and August\, bring a chair or blanket\, listen to a free concert\, and watch the sun go down over the river. \nJoin us for a performance by the 10-piece classic jazz band\, Central City Stompers. The music that they play is often called “Classic Jazz”; mostly popular tunes from the first half of the 20th century with liberal doses of blues and ragtime. Some call it “Dixieland”\, or “Hot Jazz”\, or “New Orleans Style”. Their inspirations include King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band\, Turk Murphy’s Jazz band\, the South Frisco Jazz Band\, the Yerba Buena Stompers\, and many other bands that can still be heard today at traditional jazz festivals all over the world. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please check our site. All updates will be shown there. \n  \nWe pass a hat!\nThese events are free; we pass a hat to enable us to continue the tradition. \n  \nCash bar. Please no BYOB.\nBeer and wine are available for purchase. Swing by each Thursday evening in July and August\, bring a chair or blanket\, listen to a free concert\, and watch the sun go down over the river. \nDrawing its musical influences from American roots music — swing\, boogie-woogie\, and Motown\, Eight to the Bar is known for its outstanding instrumentalists and sophisticated musical and vocal arrangements\, highlighted by female vocals. \nWith the support of independently produced CDs and videos\, Eight to the Bar has cultivated a large\, enthusiastic following that has put them in clubs from Maine to Miami as well as Europe and the Caribbean. Their rigorous touring schedule has included opening spots for Big Bad Voodoo Daddy\, Manhattan Transfer\, Robert Cray\, the late Roy Orbison and Ray Charles\, several European tours\, and a tour of the Republic of Georgia at the invitation of the U.S. Embassy located there. \n  \nIn case of inclement weather\, please check our site. Harrison and illustrated by Kate Cosgrove. \nEggs hatch and become tadpoles. The tadpoles nibble plants. They grow legs and start to breathe. Now they are little bullfrogs. They eat flies\, fish\, and spiders. In the winter they hibernate. And after three years\, they are adult bullfrogs. Rumm…rumm…rumm. Check in at the front desk upon arrival. \n \nLittle foxling\, where will you go? \nA red fox emerges from its burrow one wintry morning\, a fiery streak against stark white surroundings\, driven by hunger and curiosity to investigate its world. Encountering a mouse\, a hare\, and a wolverine\, the little fox takes on the role of both hunter and hunted before returning to the safety of its den\, where — perhaps — it dreams of something more. \nThis January\, we’ll read Little Fox in the Snow by Jonathan London. The poetic text and Impressionistic illustrations teach young learners about the behaviors of winter wildlife. \nAfter the story\, participants will make a paper fox to bring home and enjoy a special scavenger hunt. Young learners and their caregivers will have the opportunity to bring the fox from the book to life by using a paper cup and craft paper to create a 3D fox. Once built\, children can explore the world around them like the fox from the book with their new creation by their side. \nQuestions? Check in at the front desk upon arrival. \n \nWhere oh where do the leaves all go when winter comes and the cold winds blow? \nWhat happens to fish\, flowers\, field mice\, and other living things when ponds freeze and the air turns blustery? Walk with a curious child and his parents as winter’s first snow falls and find out! \nThis December\, we’ll read When Winter Comes by Nancy Van Laan. As the season begins to change\, plants and animals begin to make plans for the cold weather! This book guides young learners to explore how the world changes during the coldest time of year. \nAfter the story\, participants will make their own winter landscape to take home and join a special scavenger hunt. Using paper plates as the base\, children can bring their imagined landscapes to life with craft paper and populate their scenes with animal cut-outs. But this wouldn’t be a winter landscape without snow! Cotton balls and foam sheets will be provided to add some winter magic to the scenes. To access the live stream\, please purchase a Virtual Ticket using the link above! \nJoin us for a special talk featuring one of the artists behind our Watermark: Capturing the Connecticut exhibit! During this program\, Evie Lovett will touch on the historical origins of cyanotype photography and its contemporary usages in education and fine art. \nLovett walked the watershed where she lives in Vermont\, from its headwaters in a damp spot in a forested nature preserve\, down past her home\, alongside dirt roads\, backyards\, an auto repair shop’s junked cars\, fields of corn\, beaver dams\, wetlands\, a bird “hot spot”\, the village of Putney\, Vermont\, the shuttered Putney Paper Mill (once powered by the brook)\, under I-91 and the railroad tracks\, until it reached the Connecticut River. Along the way\, she made photographs\, gathered plants\, shapes\, and patterns. Back in her studio\, she incorporated this material\, along with text\, research\, and maps\, into her art. \n  \nEvie Lovett’s work spans cyanotype\, digital and analog photography\, digital media\, storytelling\, encaustic painting\, teaching\, public art\, and social practice in art\, in multiple mediums. She is motivated to explore the spaces where people and the natural world meet and interact\, to slow down and listen to the stories that emerge when good questions are asked of people and places. Bringing a social and environmental justice and equity lens to her work is a priority. What especially fuels her is when the tools of art-making are in people’s own hands\, enabling them to explore aspects of themselves\, their families\, their communities\, and the world around them through art-making and community collaboration\, fearlessly and with joy. No experience necessary. All supplies provided. \nJoin exhibiting artist Evie Lovett for a hands-on experience making photographs using objects\, the light of the sun\, and water! With cyanotype photography\, we make photographs by placing objects you choose on specially coated non-toxic light-sensitive paper\, exposing it to the light of the sun\, and developing the image in water. The result is a captivating image in shades of dark blue to white. Create a work of art and discover the process behind Lovett’s artwork\, currently on view in Watermark: Capturing the Connecticut exhibit. \nAlthough supplies will be provided\, you are welcome to bring your own flowers\, leaves\, or plants\, which can be used to make cyanotypes. \n \nEvie Lovett’s work spans cyanotype\, digital and analog photography\, digital media\, storytelling\, encaustic painting\, teaching\, public art\, and social practice in art\, in multiple mediums. She is motivated to explore the spaces where people and the natural world meet and interact\, to slow down and listen to the stories that emerge when good questions are asked of people and places. Bringing a social and environmental justice and equity lens to her work is a priority. What especially fuels her is when the tools of art-making are in people’s own hands\, enabling them to explore aspects of themselves\, their families\, their communities\, and the world around them through art-making and community collaboration\, fearlessly and with joy. Before dropping your plush friend off for the evening\, meet Museum staff and tell them what you like: this will help them curate a fun and exciting experience for your stuffed animal! Museum staff will photograph the stuffed animals’ nighttime exploration of the Museum exhibits and the mischief they make. Return between 10am and 5pm on Sunday\, May 4th to pick up your child’s stuffed animal friend. \nThe Sleepover ticket includes a mini adventure diary featuring photos of your stuffie’s nighttime adventures. In this Lecture Underway\, Kari Kastango will share her story of resilience\, discovery and adventure. Passengers will also learn about the challenges and logistics of this monumental undertaking. Kari will imbue passengers with a deepened appreciation of the Connecticut River and the ongoing work from source to sea to preserve and protect it. \nKari Kastango is a member of the Board of Trustees at Connecticut River Conservancy. She began her career as a research exercise physiologist (UMASS\, Amherst ‘89\, ‘92) which led her to pursue a PhD in Biostatistics (PITT ‘06). With 20 years in the pharmaceutical industry\, Kari currently works as a director of statistical operations at a clinical research organization. She balances professional and personal commitments through physical pursuits that are meditative in nature. She has completed two ultra-distance triathlons and is the first person to swim the entire length of the Connecticut River. Each Thursday evening in July and August\, bring a chair or blanket\, listen to a free concert\, and watch the sun go down over the river. \n  \nOur presenting sponsor Prive Swiss Wellness is always on hand offering free massages and giveaways. \n  \nFrom swing to Sinatra to Sting\, Java Groove is a small 4 piece band with a big sound. It all started in 2015 by the founding members of the swing band\, The Shiny Lapel Trio. When people ask what kind of music you play\, we tell them\, jazzy\, swingy\, ballady\, kinda stuff. The idea behind Java Groove is to have a stripped down swing band with the same effect and vibe of a horn section. \n  \nThe band consists of Dan Bernier on vocals and guitar\, James Alio on guitar\, Marc Iacobellis on bass guitar and Todd Fitting on drums. Todd\, James and Marc all went to middle school and high school together in Guilford\, playing in various bands together. Dan was one of the founding members of The Zingerz\, also playing swing music on the shoreline area. \n  \nIn case of inclement weather\, please check our site. Lynch will discuss his latest book\, A Field Guide to the Connecticut River: From New Hampshire to Long Island Sound (available April 2024). An expansive guide to the region\, this book features over 750 maps\, photographs\, and illustrations\, as well as geological overviews and descriptions of common plants and animals. Passengers will leave not only with greater understanding of the Connecticut River’s ecology and history\, but also a deeper appreciation for New England’s longest river. \nPatrick J. Lynch is an award-winning author\, photographer\, and artist. Lynch retired after a 45-year career at Yale University. Jilian Grey and drummer Ric Haddad together with Lou Bocciarelli on bass and Paul John Tautkus on guitar\, have become a weekly favorite at the Griswold Inn and perform at many established venues along the Shoreline. By following a river’s life cycle as it slowly but surely makes its way to sea\, children learn about both the water cycle and the journeys humans take as they grow and change throughout their lives. \n  \nA program just for kids 4+ and their caregivers\, River Tales includes a story\, a craft activity\, and an opportunity to explore the Connecticut River Museum’s exhibits through a scavenger hunt. In May\, we’ll read “They Call Me River” by Emmy Award-winning animator Maciek Albrecht\, a “beautiful and moving tribute” to rivers with “songlike writing and striking artwork.”  \n  \nAll River Tales reservations include museum admission for one adult and one child and must be purchased in advance. These facilities have the capability to produce up to 470 megawatts of power in total\, and hydroelectric power production offers many benefits to the power industry. However\, dams also present significant dangers to river health: they impede the movement of fish and damage the natural landscape in numerous ways. Join Andrew Fisk\, Northeast Regional Director for American Rivers\, for a lively presentation on the development of hydroelectric dams in the Connecticut River watershed\, the technology behind them\, and their consequences\, both good and bad\, for our state. Light refreshments will be provided. \n  \nAndrew Fisk has worked in conservation across New England for over 25 years\, serving in roles across Maine and Connecticut state government\, and holding the position of Executive Director of the Connecticut River Conservancy for over 11 years.
