SUMMARY:Save the Date: 2025 Annual Burning of the Ships Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:2025 Annual Burning of the Ships Commemoration \nSaturday\, May 10\, 2025\n2 – 3 pm \n\nEssex’s Annual Burning of the Ships Day commemorates one of the worst events in the town’s history- the fateful night in April\, 1814 when a company of Royal Marines landed at the foot of Main Street and proceeded to burn all of the ships moored and being built on the ways around town. \nThe highlight of the celebration is a parade of fife and drum corps down Main St.\, led by Essex’s own Sailing Masters of 1812. \nStep off is at 2 PM from the Essex town hall. The parade will proceed down to the cul-de-sac in front of the Connecticut River Museum where groups from the Fife and Drum Corps and the Silver Dolphins honor guard will perform.

A program just for kids 4+ and their caregivers\, River Tales includes a story and craft activity themed around nature. \n \nAfter the Industrial Revolution in the 1880s\, the Cayuhoga River in Cleveland\, Ohio\, caught fire almost twenty times\, earning Cleveland the nickname “The Mistake on the Lake.” Waste dumping had made fires so routine that Cleveland residents laughed off their combustible river and even wrote songs about it. But when the river ignited again in June 1969\, it motivated people to protect and clean up our rivers. \nIn honor of Earth Day this April\, we’ll read The Day the River Caught Fire by award-winning author Barry Wittenstein. Young learners will learn about the importance of protecting our waterways and discover the true story of how a 1969 fire in one of the most polluted rivers in America sparked the national Earth Day movement. \nQuestions?
