SUMMARY:The Famous Water Machine of Connecticut
DESCRIPTION:Special Exhibit \nThe Famous Water Machine of Connecticut: How Grit\, Determination\, and Ingenuity Launched a New Era of Submarine Warfare \nOn view: Now through July 12\, 2026 \n\nThe Connecticut River Museum is home to two Turtle submarines. One\, a replica that thousands of people step into each year. The other\, a replica commissioned at the time of the nation’s bicentennial and christened by Governor Ella Grasso. The first Turtle\, lost to the sands of time\, was constructed in secret in 1776 by David Bushnell and was used during the Revolutionary War to transport a bomb with a time delayed flintlock detonator to a British warship. The submarine was an incredible innovation for its time and\, as George Washington wrote\, “was an effort of genius.” This exhibit will showcase the innovations of its construction as we commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. \n  \nThis exhibit has been made possible through the generous support of General Dynamics Electric Boat.

She tries to capture the fleeting imperfection of Wabi Sabi in her artwork. Barbara grew up between the beach and saltwater marsh\, now haunts the local lakes\, rivers\, streams\, and waterfalls for inspiration. The works in River Ballads sing of rivers\, many inspired by the tidal reach of the Connecticut River.

SUMMARY:Waterways of the Connecticut River Valley
DESCRIPTION:Waterways of the Connecticut River Valley\nAugust 29 – October 8\, 2023 \nPlein air paintings of the Connecticut River Valley by Jerry Weiss \nFor nearly thirty years\, Jerry Weiss has recorded the dynamic landscape of the Connecticut River Valley. Since moving to Chester\, Connecticut in 1994\, Weiss has painted on site every year and in all seasons. Weiss often sets up his easel alongside the river and its tributaries\, the better to observe specific effects of light and atmosphere. His paintings at Lyme\, Old Lyme\, East Haddam\, and Essex have chronicled the river’s most trafficked points as well as its most remote branches\, revealing the balance between the human presence and the enduring natural beauty of the environment. \nFollowing a recent relocation of his studio to Old Saybrook\, the artist continues to visit these sites\, while searching out new subjects by the waterside. \nWeiss studied drawing with Roberto Martinez in Miami\, Florida\, and drawing and painting with Harvey Dinnerstein\, Robert Beverly Hale\, Ted Seth Jacobs\, Mary Beth McKenzie\, and Jack Faragasso at The Art Students League and the National Academy of Design in New York City. \nWeiss has had one-man exhibitions at the Museum of Art—DeLand\, Boca Raton Museum of Art\, the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts\, and galleries in New York\, Massachusetts\, Connecticut\, New Jersey\, and Maine. His paintings are represented in numerous public\, private\, and corporate collections\, including the New Britain Museum of American Art\, University of Pennsylvania\, the Art Students League of New York\, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Harvard Club of New York City. \nWeiss has taught workshops and lectured in Florida\, New York\, Washington\, Maine\, New Mexico\, and Colorado. His artwork and teaching methods have been featured in American Artist Workshop and American Artist Drawing magazines\, and he is a longtime contributor to Artists Magazine. \nHe is represented by the Chester Gallery (Chester\, CT) and Portraits\, Inc. \nImage: Jerry Weiss

Human creativity and resourcefulness provide new ways of protecting water resources and renewing respect for the natural environment. \nAmericans are connected to water in ways they may not always realize. And\, since water is a shared resource\, water connects everyone. With compelling text\, imagery\, interactives\, and videos\, Water/Ways reveals the central nature of water in our lives by exploring a number of important questions: \n\nHow do Americans use water? DESCRIPTION:Watercraft at Work\nMarch 23 – May 14\, 2023 \nWatercraft at Work showcases over 25 works of art from the Museum’s collections that depict vessels at work on the Connecticut River. \nFrom River-built schooners and sloops that carried stone and coal to ferries that carried people from one side of the River to the other – the exhibit will use paintings\, prints\, and photographs of working boats to highlight the importance of the River as a hub for commerce and transportation. \nWhen the Connecticut River was truly the Valley’s water highway\, a variety of watercraft moved raw materials\, manufactured goods\, and regional travelers to landings along the River and Long Island Sound and to large ports along the Atlantic Rim. DESCRIPTION:Coming This Spring! \nApril 8 – October 9 \nSpeed: Hydroplane Racing on the Connecticut River\, covers the era of speed racing on the Connecticut River during the first forty years of the Twentieth Century\, before America’s entry into World War II. \nTechnological innovation\, hydroplane design and manufacture\, women racers in a male-dominated sport\, and all of the people involved in this sport; sponsors\, designers\, and racers are showcased. \nThe exhibit includes photographs\, trophies\, memorabilia\, vintage outboard racing motors\, 1930s race newsreels\, and several vintage hydroplanes. A small child-sized interactive hydroplane for children\, and a selfie station ensure that you will have great memories of your visit. \nHydroplane racing embodied innovation\, speed\, and change. At the Connecticut River Museum\, we often use history and science to teach our visitors about these changes. This year\, we are partnering with the Lyme Art Association for an exhibit that uses art as our guide to the changes in our natural world. DESCRIPTION:August 20\, 2019\n5:30 – 7:00 pm \nHear Connecticut River Conservancy Executive Director Andy Fisk share his story of Connie the River Monster.  See firsthand proof of her existence and learn of other legendary fish tales. \nPrior to joining CRC in May 2011\, Andy served as Director of the Land and Water Quality Bureau at the Maine Department of Environmental Protection for seven years. As Maine’s land and water quality director\, Andy had extensive experience with a range of state and federal environmental quality statutes. He worked with municipalities\, industry\, and citizens to develop\, finance\, and implement clean water requirements that eliminated algae blooms\, sewer overflows and maintained stream and river flows. He was also actively involved in enacting and implementing scientifically-based protections for hundreds of thousands of acres of significant wildlife habitats for tidal and inland waterfowl as well as protections for vernal pools. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER
