Conquer the Current 2023

The Connecticut River Museum’s Sixth annual downriver paddle regatta benefits the Museum’s education programs. 

This is a One Way Race, Point A to Point B. Registrants must find their own rides to/from each location. Uber is available in our area.

This fun race/ regatta is open to all non-motorized, safe, and seaworthy paddle craft including but not limited to: canoes, kayaks, stand up/ prone paddleboards, rowboats, surf skis, shells, currachs, OC’s…  

Our partner, Surfrider Foundation Connecticut will also have the Surfrider CT SUP Sprints following our race! This is a five race circuit with top prizes including top of the line one of a kind Quickblade Race Paddles-

Date/ Times:

August 5, 2023 8:30AM to ~12:30

Starts at Eagle Landing State Park Haddam and ends at Connecticut River Museum Essex (not a loop race)

Start– Eagle Landing State Park (Gazebo), 14 Little Meadow Rd, Haddam, CT 06438

Finish– In front of the Connecticut River Museum, 67 Main St, Essex, CT 06426

 

Race Day Schedule:

8:30- 9:00 Course check in, all must be preregistered before on paddleguru. No same day registration.

9:15 (or earlier if all checked in) Eagle Landing 9 Mile Race (Haddam) course safety meeting for all participants

9:30 (or earlier if safety meeting announced)   Eagle Landing Race (Haddam) Course Start for All Vessels

12:00 Off the water cutoff for all racers.

After the race, enjoy authentic southern Bar-B- Que from Porky Pete’s on the Museum’s lawn.

Registration Fees:

$60 per solo vessel, $80 per multi-person vessel

Open to men and women age 16 and over, with classes for SUP (All), Kayak and Open/ Miscellaneous- note the classes may change based on registration numbers.  The race is staffed with support and safety boats. Youth ages 12-15 are welcome to participate with a registered participating adult, or as pre-approved by the race committee based on proven paddling/ water safety prowess.

The race may be followed by an awards ceremony, otherwise awards will be given to paddlers upon finishing.

While we have safety vessels, this race is strictly for paddlers of an intermediate to advanced level that are comfortable to safely paddle potentially against wind and potentially intense boat/wind chop for 9 miles.  All paddlers must be wearing a USCG approved personal flotation device.  All standup paddle boarders must have a PFD and leash, no exceptions.  

Participants must plan to arrange for transportation back to their cars. The race committee/ Connecticut River Museum is not able to provide transportation!

Please bring your own hydration and nutrition as unfortunately we are not able to assist with this critical part of the race (+pre/post) for you!  

Refunds/ Rain Date- This race is a fund raising charitable event run by volunteers with assistance from the Connecticut River Museum.  The race will go on with light/ moderate rain and cancelled in the event of any dangerous conditions including lightning, heavy winds, poor visibility etc.  Unfortunately, with the tremendous amount of effort needed to set this race up, we would not be able to reschedule within the same year, and view registrations as a donation to the museum’s educational fund.  Please inquire with any questions.

While we appear to be over the Covid pandemic, we continue to abide by any CDC and local health authority guidelines, which currently have no restrictions.  

This is a One Way Race, Point A to Point B. Registrants must find their own rides to/from each location. Uber is available in our area.

Race Route:
The 9 mile race starts at Eagle Landing State Park in Haddam and concludes in front of the Connecticut River Museum in Essex.

Neither the race committee nor the Connecticut River Museum will provide transportation.  To assist with carpooling, cars can be left on the upper lawn of the CT River Museum starting Friday evening.  Participants must plan to arrange for transportation back to their cars. The race committee/ Connecticut River Museum does not provide transportation!

Paddlers are responsible for bringing their own hydration and nutrition.

Conquer the Current will paddle on this year, but there are some changes!

  • For 2020 we are partnering with our friends at Surfrider’s Connecticut Chapter ct.surfrider.org.
  • In light of Covid-19, Surfrider CT made the tough decision to cancel their annual event, the Charles Island SUP CUP. CT River Museum is thrilled that Surfrider CT has decided to support our Conquer the Current paddle regatta! Our mutual love of paddling and protecting our beautiful waters makes it a perfect collaboration!
  • To streamline our race and keep within the State of CT regulations, this year will solely feature the most popular 9 mile race!
  • Registration closes on 8/7/2020. Register early to help us stage this event. THERE IS NO SAME DAY REGISTRATION.

The Connecticut River Museum’s FOURTH annual downriver paddle regatta to benefit the Museum’s education programs will take place on Saturday, August 8, 2020 from 8:00 – 3:00. The Regatta is open to all paddle craft: canoes, kayaks, stand up paddle boards and rowboats!

This year will feature 1 race route only:

Conquer the Current Paddle Regatta 2019

The Connecticut River Museum’s THIRD annual downriver paddle regatta to benefit the Museum’s education programs will take place on August 10th, 2019 from 8:00 – 3:00. The Regatta is open to all paddle craft: canoes, kayaks, stand up paddle boards and rowboats!

This year will feature 3 race routes:
1. Essex Harbor Recreation Race: The new 3 mile race starts at Pettipaug Yacht Club in Essex and finishes in front of the Connecticut River Museum $45 registration per person, $75 for tandem kayaks and canoes.

2. Eagle Landing Race: The 9 mile race starts at Eagle Landing State Park in Haddam and finishes in front of the Connecticut River Museum in Essex. $60 registration per person, $85 for tandem kayaks and canoes.

3. Arrigoni Bridge Distance Race: This 23 mile points race starts at the Yankee Boat Yard, 54 Riverview St, Portland, CT 06480 and finishes in front of the Connecticut River Museum in Essex. $75 registration per person, $130 for tandem kayaks and canoes.

The races are open all age 16 and over, with classes for SUP, Kayak, Canoe and Open. Both races are fully staffed with support and safety boats. Youth ages 12-15 are welcome to participate with a registered participating adult. The races will be followed by awards on the Museum lawn, lunch and activities.

We recommend participants carpool or find alternate modes of transportation back to their cars. The race committee nor the Connecticut River Museum will provide transportation.  To help with carpooling, cars can be left on the upper lawn of the CT River Museum starting Friday evening.  There will be a roped off section on the the upper lawn where boats/ boards/ etc can be stored after the race while participants enjoy the post race festivities.

Please consider bringing a refillable water bottle! We will have drinking water on site and would like to make this event as environmentally friendly as possible!
